One response to “A Possible Progressive Flameout in CD1 Race”

I respectfully disagree with the sentiment that progressives are over reliant on the Democratic Party.  The State Party Leadership usually steps in to help advance the party’s agenda in cases like this.  Indeed, no other state party chairman would let a congressional candidate run for reelection with a 15% approval rating.

This failure is squarely on the shoulders of Ed Pacheco, and we need to be honest about this.  Ed Pacheco is a coward who doesn’t have the courage to take on a guy with 15%–FIFTEEN PERCENT–approval ratings!!!!  That’s how gutless our leader is, and that’s why we are going to lose this seat.

    What to do about this?

I think you’ve got this backwards.  Instead of focusing on what we do about CD-1, we need to focus on what to do about Ed Pacheco.  This is increasingly important because he is identified as a “progressive” and his cowardice is now becoming emblematic of progressives in Rhode Island.  He’s not only embarassing our party and hurting Rhode Islanders, he is shaming progressives by association.  Pacheco’s lack of leadership is not limited to the Cicilline issue either; when Caprio lost all credibility in the Governor’s race, Pacheco had “no comment.”  Pacheco has been silent on Ruggerio/Ciccone too.  Most State Party Chairs work to stop the party from hemorrhaging during a scandal.  Ed Pacheco either doesn’t have the gravitas or the guts to get in the ring and tell these jokers to resign.  He is worse than ineffective–he is hurting our party.  The only explanation for his failure to lead is that he is working behind the scenes to build support for his own  personal ambitions, and that means that he’s not putting the Party first.

What progressives need to do is start a party movement to force him out and fast.  The bylaws state we can reelect a new chair with a new majority.  Let’s do it.  We can’t afford to let another election cycle go by with an unserious, disengaged Party Chair.
