What Thomas Tobin and the other bishops, and the Vatican don’t say when they talk about transforming “the secular order into the Kingdom of God” is that when Jesus spoke about this he was talking about clothing the naked, feeding the hungry and visiting the sick.  I have no doubt that in today’s world, where providing healthcare goes beyond what a singular individual can do, it would also mean that society needs to be providing that healthcare for everyone.  The nuns that the Vatican and the bishops would punish for supporting that healthcare understand.   The fact that the Vatican would even consider punishing those nuns for living the gospel, rather than pushing the Vatican’s purely political agenda is solid proof that Tobin’s statements are lies intended to misguide the good Catholics of Rhode Island.  Shame on you Bishop Tobin!

Every time I hear this right wing theocrat issue another edict, I go back and review the role of the Catholic Church during the rise and spread of fascism in Italy, Spain and Germany during the 1930′s.  Things are eerily similar now.

Stephen Alquist is quite courageous in speaking out publically against the Bishop who speaks for the largest religious group in the state with connections everywhere in a country where criticizing religion is usually considered out of bounds.  First, Tobin is clearly hypocrital and not really interested in religious freedom since he wants to use government power to force Catholic doctrine on religions that would approve same sex marriage or the right to abortions (not to speak of non-believers) and prevent them from carrying out their religious freedom.  Second, his doctrine opposed to birth control is ludicrous, does he expect folks to have sex just 2 or 3 times in their lives?  Nonsense like that could come only from a celibate clergy (which as we know often doesn’t follow the rules eiither!)

I note the right wing often calls for small government but pandering to the religious zealots, they rarely object to government restrictions on reproductive freedom or the ability of same sex couples to marry.
