Who Does Gemma Support?

Anthony GemmaIt’s getting harder all the time to believe that Anthony Gemma is truly a Democrat. It just often seems more likely that his campaign is all some big elaborate hoax. Or, perhaps, Gemma is demonstrating his true political acumen.

Either way, Buddy Cianci had him so tied up in knots the other day that the only member of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation that he said he would vote for this November would be himself and Jack Reed. Neither of whom will be on the ballot.

When Buddy asked if he would support any of the other Rhode Island Democrats running for Congress he tried to dodge the question. “I’d have to look at the person,” Gemma said. Now I don’t expect outsiders to be national security experts before they get to office, but you’d think by the time he declared that he was running for congress as a Democrat that he would know enough about the other Democratic legislators from his state to know whether he would vote for them or not.

Then Buddy asked him specifically about Sheldon Whitehouse.

“I’m going to be honest with you,” Gemma said to Cianci. “I’m frustrated that he has not stepped up and done what is right for me.”

Points for honesty, Anthony, but I won’t be voting for anyone who so brazenly puts his own interest first. Vote your conscience, not for a quid pro quo.

Of all the reasons not to vote for Anthony Gemma, one of the most politic that can be cited is that no one knows how he would vote for anything. Now we don’t even know if he is supporting the other incumbent members of the party he purports to be a member of – though I have my doubts.

Cianci seemed to as well.

“You’re a Democrat,” Buddy said. “Or at least you say you are.”

Anthony Gemma is one of the most bitter sounding people I’ve ever heard. You really have to listen to that radio interview to hear his tone. He sounds like a cranky kid who needs a nap.

    Fantasy Island Democrat

So “Democrat” Anthony Gemma will only support Democrats that have “stepped up” for him? He won’t endorse Senator Whitehouse or Representative Langevin, the gentlemen he wishes to join in Washington, for reelection? Does that extend to President Obama as well?  Will he also switch his positions on issues, yet again, based on endorsements?  Yet he seems truly puzzled when his “strong Democratic credentials” or preparedness as a candidate are questioned.
In many states, a candidate who fails to get a minimum number of votes at a political party convention, let alone not even getting one’s name placed into nomination, would not be included on that party’s primary ballot.  I don’t necessarily support that rule, but this new round of ridiculous, unprepared and immature behavior by Gemma makes him increasingly irrelevant, and has to lead to further calls for him to drop out of the race.  To preserve his own reputation, and perhaps a few hundred thousand dollars of his own funds, he should strongly consider it.

It sounds to me that Bob Plain and Bob Walsh will be voting for Doherty this November because I believe they’re both too smart to vote for a lying, self centered, weasel like Cicilline, to ‘represent’ them.

      …Zing!!

In truth, the only people who care about Gemma’s Democrat bona fides are Democratic operatives. I doubt primary voters are going to be thinking to themselves “is he Democrat enough”? Further, if you are the Cicilline team do you really want Gemma to drop out the race?

I don’t think you do. Why? Gemma is not a polished politician and will probably make political gaffes, those gaffes draw attention to Gemma and draw it away from Cicilline. If Cicilline had no primary opponent Doherty and crew could focus their attention on telling the public how Cicilline mishandled Providence for the next 4 months. Instead, they’ll only have two months and who knows what the conversation will be by the time primary is over.

Gemma has a chance because voters are so pissed off as Cicilline and rightfully so. Still, if I’m Cicilline, I’m glad to not be facing a challenger who is a bit more polished.
