House Leadership Set to Change Hands from Murphy to Fox

Posted by: Matt Jerzyk in State House

The Providence Journal is reporting that the House Democratic caucus is set to meet to vote on their new leadership team and, based on reports, that new leadership team will be as follows:

  1. Speaker: Gordon Fox (D-4)
  2. Majority Leader: Nicholas Mattiello (D-15)
  3. Whip: J. Patrick O'Neill (D-59)

The Journal's report also indicates that Republican Bob Watson and Democrat Greg Schadone will formally be nominated for the Speaker's position, but that they acknowledge not having enough votes to be Speaker.

Two additional things.

1. Note that the Whip position became available when current Majority Whip - Peter Kilmartin (D-61) - announced that he was going to run for Attorney General in 2010.

2. There will likely be changes to a few committees.  It has already been announced that Rep. John McCauley will become the new chair of the municipal government committee.  Expect changes in Labor and Environment as well.

Does that mean a same-sex marriage bill can pass the House now?

When exactly will this take place? Either tomorrow or Wednesday since the GA doesn't meet before breaks or holiday weekends. Any idea when?

Rep. Lima

Dear "right of center" -

Currently, Rep. Lima is the "Speaker Tempore" and I have not heard that this is going to change with the new leadership. The only positions that I reference in this post are Speaker, Leader and Whip.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Why would Mattiello EVER be the pick for Majority Leader?

Loyalty
written by right_of_center, February 11, 2010
@matt Because he's been loyal to Murphy. That's part of the deal for Murphy to step aside now, when they know that Fox has the votes. That's how politics works. Kiss the right butts and you can get far. Just ask Jan Malik.

Lima is being replaced

Looks like Lima is in fact being replaced by Rep. Coderre

@ROC Your comment on loyalty almost goes without saying.
