    Excellent diary, Tom.

The repeated failures of the mainstream media to cover real stories, coupled with how often they “report” bogus garbage, is exactly why blogs became so popular.

Although GoLocalProv isn’t exactly mainstream media, I’d still like to know how much money in ad buys Alex & Ani, which owns Mediapeel, forks over to them to come up with some of their lousy Gemma stories. Let’s also keep in mind that GoLocal has also “reported” stories about Linc Chafee being tied to Ukrainian mobsters. You can’t make this stuff up. So much for the fact-based journalism they trumpet.

Great Work Tom. Gemma has gone too far with his false accusations and wreckless comments. Now all of a sudden, since the polls are not in his favor, he wants to change the tone of his campaign. Too little too late.

The status update on R I Future’s Facebook page:

    Rhode Island’s Future
“Do you think the local media was complicit in hyping Anthony Gemma’s unfounded claims of voter fraud?”

    Short answer – obviously.

“. . . former Carcieri aide Gary Sasse who was commissioned by the City Council to write a report about the issue . . . ”

Aren’t Gary Sasse and Judge Flanders over at the RISC now?  Isn’t the legal counsel the Providence Journal chooses to represent them also a vice president and director of the Thomas More Law Center?  Wasn’t Brendan Doherty introduced by by OSPRI sponsor Alan Hasenfeld?  Wasn’t this the same media that ramrodded through pension “reform”, the bondholder protection law and the takeover of Central Falls?

It seems to me, if you go to the Engage Rhode Island pages and the RISC pages, the policies presented seem to line up fairly closely with the ones promoted by the media.  Obviously, Doherty is their “man”. I think the establishment media would prefer to see Doherty face Gemma.  I think, however, the media will settle to  aid and abet Gemma in his quest in what seems to be a vindictive attempt to paint a picture of his opponent that is more a mirror image of himself.  I believe those who control the media hope the slurs and mudslinging, along with thinly veiled homophobic implications regarding Cicilline’s character, will set Cicilline up for a defeat in November.

There are several things I do not like about Cicilline.  It seems that in order to get elected the forces that be have to be placated in some way.  I believe Cicilline has catered to the same forces that he is now up against.  I wish there were better candidates but we only seem to get the one’s who have the approval of the media and a lot of the so called non-profit organizations that have sprung up over the years.  Cicilline definitely has my vote, regardless.  There is too much at stake this time around.  There is so much wrong with the negative media attention he has gotten since he was elected to Congress.

The ProJo is so desperate for revenue that they will hype anything that will sell an extra newspaper or get more people to click on their website. (The irony being that if a reader of their e-edition shares a link and someone else visits the link, there are no ads on it, and thus no new revenue. But not true of their news blog and other parts of their site.) Their treatment of Jessica Ahlquist was disgraceful: they fanned the flames against her in what was a slam-dunk legal case because it drew lowest common denominator commenters (i.e., haters) to their website and sold a few more papers. I decided a while back that the ProJo’s current motto should be “Made you look!” Meanwhile, democracy declines as the public is less informed about real issues. Sad.
