Masjid al-Islam in Smithfield was the site of a candle light vigil for Muslim children. Many Muslim children live in a state of fear an anxiety due to the hateful rhetoric of President Donald Trump and the current political climate. A letter from a 12-year old Muslim girl asked, “Why am I afraid to be Muslim? Why am I so afraid? Why do I not feel safe any more? Please help me feel safe again.”
Notes and art in support of Muslim children, promising support, solidarity and safety were taped to a wall. It was, I am told, a beautiful event.
Of course, it takes more than a single candlelight vigil to reassure and comfort children who feel ostracized and under attack. It takes a community dedicated to fostering a safe, welcoming environment in which children and grow and prosper. As a society, we seem a long way from that.
