If you like ‘Hamilton’ you will love Jared Paul’s ‘Get My Ghost’

jaredpaul1Lately I’ve been listening to ‘Hamilton,’ the hip-hop soundtrack to the breakout Broadway musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton, a rags-to-riches hero who led a revolution and helped form – for better or worse – a more perfect union.

Then I listened to Providence native Jared Paul’s new album ‘Get My Ghost’ and realized his music is every bit as powerful, and it touches on many of the same themes. If Hamilton is a hip-hop story about the birth of our nation, Jared Paul raps about a rebirth – a second American Revolution, if you will, to form an even more perfect union than the one inherited from the founding fathers and subsequent custodians.

Take, for example, Paul’s the second single from the new album ‘$8 Smoothie’ – a pot shot at capitalism’s exploitation and gentrification of health food.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz0veYln24M&feature=youtu.be

He is definitely a different breed of radical than was Hamilton in 1776. But both activists fought for and wrote about a better economic model than the one they were born into.

“We sell organic fruits, but not to the poor,” Paul sings in ‘$8 Smoothie’. “Gentrify the East Side, financial segregation.”

Jared-Paul-Get-My-Ghost-coverJared Paul grew up in Providence and is a resident artist at AS220. He’s long been known for his spoken-word performances, and the new hip-hop album feels like an extension, or a musical version, of those. In both mediums, Paul explores bluntly the failures of corporatism and capitalism.

“At the forefront of underground radical art for over decade, Jared Paul has toured relentlessly as a spoken word artist, emcee, and revolutionary organizer,” according to according to Black Box Tapes, the Denver, Colorado hip hop label that released the album. “‘Get My Ghost is the culmination of the last ten years of protesting, touring, and learning.”

In ‘Human Beings Migrate’ the last cut on the album, he sings, “If my clothes are slave made, then I’m a part of their chains. We’re all hypocrites, ain’t no one free of blame… but I don’t want that on my heart, don’t want it on my name. Just want to live clean, there’s got to be a way to erase the exchange: outsourcing oppression for the sake of convenience it’s an unequal trade.”

jaredpaul_occupyLike Hamilton, Paul doesn’t only wax poetic about building a better society. Both actually went to battle for their politics. Paul was a key organizer of the Occupy Providence protests. He was among the most outspoken radical voices during the months long protests in 2011 and 2012 and was rarely far from the front lines of a march or direct action. In 2008, he was arrested outside the Republican National Convention and in 2014 he was part of what the New York Civil Liberties Association believes to be the largest protest-related police settlement in history for that arrest.

But ‘Get My Ghost’ isn’t as overtly political. “This full length album showcases Jared’s unique storytelling abilities, making it more of a rap-album-as-memoir then a heavy handed political manifesto,” according to Black Box Tapes.

‘Five or Five Thousand’ is an anthem about how “every choice counts,” as Paul sings. “I go all in, whether five or five thousand.”

There’s a release party for the record on Tuesday, May 31 at Aurora in Providence. Between now and then, you should give the album a listen.

New low-power FM community radio station coming to Providence

2015-11-12 Community Radio 02Starting next Summer, if all goes as planned, Providence will be home to a new low-power FM community radio station. APB Radio, 101.1 FM is a collaboration between AS220, Brown Student and Community Radio (BSR) and Providence Community Radio (PCR), all nonprofits. The three groups partnered to strengthen their application with the FCC, beating out competitors for what may well be the very last low-power FM radio station license in this area.

Airtime will be split three ways on the new station, with AS220 taking 50 percent of the airtime, PCR programming at least 10 hours a week and BSR the rest. The schedule is staggered and complex to avoid any one group being consigned to the midnight to morning slot, and will probably change going forward.

2015-11-12 Community Radio 04The groups will collaborate on the construction and fundraising phase of the project. Total projected cost is estimated at $25,000. The plan is to mount their antennae on the PBS television tower located in the Cranston St Industrial Park in South Providence. The station will run at about 100 watts and reach a three and a half mile radius.

APB Radio will be advertiser free, supported through underwriters, grants and other means. Almost all content will be developed by the community, and of course it will be parallel streamed on the Internet.

“Providence can communicate with itself in real time,” enthused PCR’s Wesli Dymoke.

Local poet, activist and performer Jared Paul was on hand to give a flavor of what community driven radio might be like.  Reza Clifton and José Ramirez from the BSR show Sonic Watermelons interviewed Paul live as a live demo of Sonic Watermelons, a show they currently do on BSR which would move to APB radio when the station begins broadcasting.

“I’m excited that the radical community in Providence will get to have a crazy amount of shows on the radio, in a central location,” said Paul during the interview.

Questions from the audience concerned foreign language shows. Right now there are more than 29 non-English languages spoken in Rhode Island said a presenter, and commercial radio serves maybe five of them. 101.1 may be able to cover some of that gap.

Another question concerned BMI and ASCAP, music licensing groups that AS220 is currently boycotting. Will that boycott extend to 101.1?

“No, it will not extend to 101.1. BMI/ASCAP do not collect radio licensing fees, was the answer.

In the immediate future the station needs money, fundraising, organizing and marketing. An Indiegogo fundraising campaign is planned for January, and the groups will need help putting together a video for that campaign.

All in all, this is an exciting opportunity for Providence, said Dymoke of PCR, but, “if we fumble it, we don’t get another chance.”

AS220 is known for hosting groundbreaking art on a regular basis. Thursday saw the opening of an exhibition of two artists who certainly fit that profile perfectly.

VISIT AS220 FOR MORE INFO!

Hannah Purcell Martin’s work is traditional, but nonetheless has a vibrant quality.

2015-10-01 18.58.22 With traditional paint and surface mediums, she has created a series of images of haunting beauty in NATURE AT A BLUR.

2015-10-01 18.59.55 A Providence-based New York native, she graduated from University at Buffalo with a BFA in Studio Arts-Print Media.

2015-10-01 19.00.04In ALL JOKES GUARUNTEED STOLEN, Armstrong Diaz combines ironic comic strip-styled art with a variety of surfaces.

2015-10-01 18.58.47From scrap metal to black leather to a three-dimensional cube, he is challenging both the expectations of style and confines of what is ‘allowed’ to constitute art.

2015-10-01 18.59.00Comics were, until the rise of the graphic novel in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, considered children’s fair, and bad at that, excepting instances of kitsch in the work of artists in the vein of Any Warhol.

Tuesday to Tuesday: RI Future’s arts and entertainment calendar

grafitti-1RIFuture is a fine institution that has made important contributions to the Rhode Island news culture as the ProJo has shrunk in both scope and talent while the news channels have become more corporatized. It is our hope that this new feature – the ‘Tuesday to Tuesday Arts and Entertainment Calendar’ will bring a lighter side to the fare. As we move into the dog days of summer, I’m open to tips and press releases regarding the events you or someone you know may be holding in the next few weeks. Feel free to e-mail data to me at andrew.james.stewart.rhode.island@gmail.com.

MY PICKS
Here is my selection of events that you should definitely consider checking out this week.

  • 7/28
Get Out! Cardboard Rockets at Providence Children’s Museum, 1-3 pm, Free with Museum admission of $9.00 per person
Something fun to do with the kids and probably a minor refresher on the basic physics of aviation.
  • 7/29
Vinyasa Yoga with Julie Shore at AS220 Live Arts Dance Studio, Noon-1 pm, $5
Why not try out something new and help a working-class instructor at the same time. I do not subscribe to the theology underlying yoga itself, but the exercises and poses are helping me overcome some back issues and are worth checking out.
  • 7/30
CAPOTE at Warwick Public Library, 7 pm, Free -or- Movies on the Block: BLADE RUNNER at Grants Block, 7:30 pm, Free
This one is a tough call, so I will advise both, it depends on where you located in the state. CAPOTE is a fantastic retelling of how the true crime novel In Cold Blood was composed by the titular author, whereas BLADE RUNNER remains one of the greatest visions of the future in the past three decades, a film I rank with STAR WARS as the best science fiction pictures in American history.
  • 7/31
RI Peoples Assembly: Emancipation Day Festival at Temple of Music Roger Williams Park, 12:25, Free -and- Food Truck Fridays at Carousel Village in Roger Williams Park, 5 pm, Free admission
Take a trip over to Roger Williams Park and help some local businessmen by sampling their great food along with celebrating the end of American slavery. The two are located essentially next to each other, so it is an easy task.
  • 8/1
August Gallery Reception at AS220 Galleries, 5 pm, Free
AS220 continues to be one of the great centers of art in the Providence area and this is a great opportunity to take in some of their new works.
  • 8/2
THE EMPIRE REVUE PRESENTS “THE OCEAN SHOW” at AS220 Main Stage, 8 pm, $10
A comedy-music spectacular about the ocean blue, including a selection of seafaring tunes. What’s to dislike?
  • 8/3
“THE SOCIAL AVENGER” A reading written and directed by LENNY SCHWARTZ at Arctic Playhouse, 8 pm, $10
Lenny Schwartz is a prolific and versatile writer who has put his talent to work in a variety of genres and this should be a great night.
  • 8/4
Rhode Island International Festival Opening Night at PPAC, 7 pm, $15/$50 for Gala Event also
The weeklong RIIFF is a mainstay of RI film culture and opening night is usually a great event to attend.  Tickets can be purchased here.

MY PICKS
Here is my selection of events that you should definitely consider checking out this week.

  • 7/21
HOME/RUN: A Play at Matthewson Street Church Black Box, 8 pm, $5-10
It would be a conflict of interest if I did not mention I know one of the writers here from my film festival days. But I honestly do think that this sort of interactive theatre is important, it helps generate a dialogue about our society and how it operates. And with Providence in the midst of all sorts of lunatic plots to gentrify the neighborhoods while bailing out billionaires so they can build baseball stadiums, we need these sorts of dialogues that democratize our understanding of home more than ever.
  • 7/22
The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence, 7:30 pm, Pay What You Decide
The author of this play previous was nominated for a 2014 Pulitzer but returned to the drawing board for a second draft.  This should be impressive.
  • 7/23
Movies on the Block: THE SHINING at Grants Block, 7:30 pm, Free
Kubrick’s classic horror film remains chilling after 35 years because he was making a truly amazing film.  Having studied him in college, I can also say that this is much deeper than you think and that the recent ROOM 237 was closer to the mark than you might think in terms of the subtext about genocide.
  • 7/24
FringePVD: “WRITER’S BLOCK” BY RADIOACTIVE THEATRE COMPANY at AS220’s Blackbox, 7 pm, $5-$10
To be honest, I have no idea what this play is about but, since I know very well what writer’s block is, I imagine it might appeal to anyone inclined to epistolary.
  • 7/25
Cultural Survival Bazaar at Tiverton Four Corners Art Center, 10 am-5 pm, Free
This is a arts and crafts festival featuring works from the so-called Third World, something that intrigues me to no end.
  • 7/26
Outdoor Summer Concerts: French Roast at Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, 6-8 pm, $10 General Admission/$5 Children 12 and under/$5 Botanical Center Conservancy members
This is a Franco-American band that does especially Canadian and Bayou music, plus it’s located in one of my favorite parks in the state.  What’s not to love?
  • 7/27
VIOLET / RRLEW / VALISE / MUYASSAR KURDI / GYNA BOOTLEG at Psychic Readings, 9 pm-1 am, $6
Six dollars for five bands at one of the best locations in Providence, why not?

culturaldistrictWith the intention of helping to spruce up the Upper South Providence neighborhood, the Creative Capital recently won a $300,000 ArtPlace America grant.

The project, ‘Illuminating Trinity’, will focus on renovating the Grace Church Cemetery and build capacity and programs at Southside Cultural Center.

“We have seen arts and culture transform our city and we know that cultural expression in our neighborhoods is just as important as in downtown,” said Mayor Jorge Elorza. “I am grateful ArtPlace America has decided to join our efforts by helping provide this opportunity to improve Trinity Square.”

The program also will bring to Providence one of two pilot programs, Community Innovation Lab, developed by EmcArts, which integrates art and artists into the process of developing systemic change.

“We’re thrilled to be working alongside Mayor Elorza, RI-LISC, and the other partners to harvest the unique power of local artists and cultural workers to catalyze systemic change,” says Richard Evans, president of EmcArts. “Public safety is a complex problem. It requires questioning old assumptions, collaborating across boundaries, deep understanding of local system dynamics, and rehearsing many potential strategies for change. The Community Innovation Lab framework creates space for high-impact, creative solutions to emerge and builds a robust network of advocates to ensure that those strategies get implemented.”

Other organizations participating include RI Black Storytellers, RI Latino Arts, the Cambodian Society, the Laotian Society, ECAS Theater, and RISD.

AS220 also applied for the same grant. I sat down with AS220 founder Bert Crenca, who shared his thoughts on the topic.

MY PICKS
Here is my selection of events that you should definitely consider checking out this week.

  • 7/14
The Tuesday Night Film Series Presents GUITAR #1711 & LIZBETH: A VICTORIAN NIGHTMARE at The Arctic Playhouse, 7-10 pm, $10.00/$7.00 seniors/$5.00 children under 12
This one was a tough pick because both Josh Gravel, who is running the Arkham Film Society screening at AS220, and Ric Rebelo, whose film LIZBETH is showing here, were major forces in my life when I volunteered for them at the RI Horror Film Fest a decade ago. However, despite my love of trash cinema, I have to give Ric the benefit of the doubt, he’s a Communications Professor at Bristol Community College who knows his stuff and has a great grasp of all things horrific in the Ocean State. Furthermore, I can’t deny that watching how a guitar is made fascinates me to no end.
  • 7/15
Intro to the 35mm Camera at AS220 Media Arts, 7-9 pm, $45
I’m a very retro kind of person, I like phonographs better than MP3s and prefer my films on reel-to-reel projection. Furthermore, I think humanity has genuinely lost something in transitioning from the old chemical process over to digital photography. So this is right up my alley and probably will prove to be the skill to have when the dust settles and people realize trying to get the best digital camera is futile.
  • 7/16
Movies on the Block: JAWS at Grants Block, Dusk circa 8 pm, Free
It’s one of the greatest films of the 1970s, the picture that singlehandedly created the summer blockbuster, and was the launching pad for all things Spielberg. The acting remains strong, the music by John Williams is fantastic, and even after four decades, the terror still is gripping despite the fact the shark looked fake the day it was released. Who can resist?
  • 7/17
“Die, Mommie, Die” by Charles Busch at 2nd Story Theatre, Select Thurs, Fri., Sat., Sun. 7:30PM, $10-$25
This is the preview night performance of a biting satire. Featuring a drag queen as the protagonist, this send-up of 1950’s and 60’s domineering matriarch films, like MOMMIE DEAREST, has already been made into a film and promises to be hilarious.
  • 7/18
9th Annual Greatness of Gospel: Shakespeare in the Spirit at Mixed Magic Theatre, 7:30 pm, $20
Gospel music, a multi-ethnic theatre company, and the Bard? This is too good not to miss.  This performance proves claims that the Bard is unable to be rescued from the imperialist tradition that spawned him is for naught.
  • 7/19
NEAC presents: Shryne/Jon&Sara/Mattera/Mars Lazzarus at Fatt Squirrel, 8 pm, $8 (21+)
I’ve only heard two of these performers before, Shryne and Mars Lazarus. But it’s on that basis I am making the recommendation. Shryne is a multi-piece band that has some real talent in terms of instrumental arrangement, while Mars is simply a fantastic guitarist.
  • 7/20
No Time to Waste at Providence Children’s Museum, Four 20-minute shows at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm, Free with Museum admission of $9.00 per person
Kids-friendly fare is pretty hard to come by, and fare that imparts an important message about our oh-so-fragile ecology is simply an endangered species. This is a 20 minute show about recycling and how kids can become active participants in the effort. This is something we all need to become experts in, our lives in fact depend on it. So even if you are child-free, check this out and update your skill sets.
  • 7/21
HOME/RUN: A Play at Matthewson Street Church Black Box, 8 pm, $5-10
