riders against the stormOriginally from Providence, the politically progressive hip hop duo Riders Against the Storm are back in town tonight for a one-night performance at Fete. Doors open at 9pm, show starts at 10.

In 2007, the Phoenix lauded the band members as local heroes for starting a freestyle troupe in Providence. They have since married and moved to Austin, Texas. But they still recall their RI roots on their website:

“While in Providence, RI they recognized their role in the shifting of communities. Their presentations became the art of bringing people together. While communing with group after group, they soon saw how much more easily people were motivated and open for information. They later found out that that was the essence of ceremony. They crafted their signature experience and moved to Austin, TX to spread their offering to “The City of Music.”

Check them out on PBS’ Art in context here:

Synchronicity at SXSW

If there is one word I can use to describe my experience so far down at South by Southwest, it would be synchronicity. On at least two occasions, I’ve mentioned people I wanted to see only to see them no more than 12 hours later, and I met a Rhode Islander working at a car company’s vendor booth!

For those that don’t know, I’m down at SXSW to enjoy the tunes and performances of some of my favorite performers and to conduct interviews for Rhode 2 Africa: Elect the Arts 2012 (R2A 2012). But for now, the pictures above show some of the fun I’ve been having with Riders Against the Storm, the Austin-based band (that used to live in RI) that I am interviewing for R2A 2012, other RI friends who are here, and some of the musicians I’ve caught, including Shane Hall, 5th Elament, and Queen Deelah.
