No mention of Iran, Brian? Notably Cicilline just voted to limit the Obama administration’s nonmilitary foreign policy options. All together now, progressives…. 4 more wars! 4 more wars!

Cicilline went to Israel last year as a guest of AIPAC.  As a congressman in trouble in his own district, he knows he cannot win without broad Democrat support, and this includes an important constituency.  No matter how he feels personally about the middle east, he will have to support war against Iran or Syria or whatever else Likud/Israel dictates.

Thanks for this post which for once was really about Congressional issues rather than much of the coverage elsewhere which as if Cicilline were running for Mayor of Providence again.
I would encourage “Pinhatlib” to explain what he meant by implying Cicilline voted for more wars.  I don’t know what vote he was talkig about.
And though Jewish voters are a constituency, the above post is quite misleading to suggest Jewish voters want a war against Iran – indeed there is an active Jewish group in the district (J Street Rhode Island) actively campaigning against this, and really nobody in the community advocating for such a war (that would almost certainly be disastrous for all)
What is Doherty’s position on this kind of issue?

      I did post a link…

      ** quote **
Ahead of the vote Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), a tough critic of the resolution and one of the few who voted against it, warned that the US is “getting ready for war against Iran” with Thursday’s vote.

The non-binding resolution H.Res.568 that overwhelmingly passed 401-11, effectively calls for a military attack on Iran when it obtains “nuclear weapons capability.” The vague interpretation, critics say, already applies to Iran, not to mention Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, and actually any other country with a civilian nuclear program.

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff for Secretary of State Colin Powell, warned “This resolution reads like the same sheet of music that got us into the Iraq war, and could be the precursor for a war with Iran. It’s effectively a thinly-disguised effort to bless war.”

Keep in mind, I’m one of Cicillini’s staunchest supporters here on the blog, but that vote was simply shameful and a reminder that in D.C. there is no such thing as progressive security policy.

I was talking about AIPAC, not Rhode Island Jews, who like other American Jews are frequently out of step with Israeli policies.  When Cicilline went on his Israeli junket, it was not to promote the interests of Rhode Island Jews, but those of the Likud government in Tel Aviv.  It is quite possible that Cicilline himself was conflicted about the trip, as his assistant administrator lied to me about it when I called his office to track him down (in regards to another matter).  In any event, the beleagured Congressman cannot afford to be independent on this issue; if Israel decides to go to war (more likely using the U.S. as a surrogate), he will vote to pay the bills for it, whether he is “pro-war” or not.  That’s all I’m saying.  Of course, David Cicilline is far preferable to his genuinely dreadful opponents, but let’s be honest with ourselves here.

So progressives should ignore the lack of integrity displayed by the Congressman in his previous elected post as mayor?

I think the mayor did a fine job in Providence. There’s little question that he would have run again and won had Rep. Kennedy not stepped down. The only ones with “lack of integrity” here are those who ignore his actual record and focus instead on a single statement made during the campaign.

Single statement? Not only did he lie to his constituents, he violated city ordinance and bought time by requiring the independent auditor to file an open records request. Sorry for the rehash but your dismissiveness is exactly what is wrong with voters in this state. As long as he speaks through your agenda, character is not a factor.

Yeah, except that I started off these comments with a criticism of the Congressman. I’m hardly dismissive of his record when I think criticism is warranted.

Ahead of Kucinich? Maybe Dennis is busy reading the law first. Anyway, If you look at the roll call votes and analyze them, Kucinich is in the top of the Progressive class voting liberal @80% of the time- and Cicilline in the middle near the bottom voting liberal 60% of the time.
However, he is our highest rated representative in the House.
“Mr. Security” Langevin votes like a moderate Republican.
Whitehouse rates just below Cicilline due to his Neo-liberal warhawk streak mostly and Reed tanks out the bottom w a rating close to Leiberman.  I call it the Blue State Blues.
Back to your blog, unfortunately for David, Dem Mayor Taveras may have sealed his fate when blamed him for all the city woes due to bad bookkeeping (being generous here- he kinda called him a fraud).
Taveras then used him as the reason he had to fire all the teachers making sure the liberals didn’t like him much either. Then they gerrymandered the district to give him all the voters the mayor had just told them had screwed them.
Then Vatican SuperStar Ray Flynn blindsided him w Dem’s for Doherty. Sad.
Poor David. He had a good term in a bad Congress but his party at home swung right again just like they did to force Kucinich to lose his seat. He was the best we had as far as liberal ideology and the party put him on the ropes. Am I sensing a theme here?

Cicilline sealed his own fate by committing a fraud against the voters. Taveras was merely the messenger. Some here are sorry he didn’t play like the good Democrat and keep his mouth shut.
