The second screening will focus on the case of Italy, featuring Bernardo Bertolucci‘s The Spider’s Stratagem (1970).
Fresh off the heels of his more famous case study of Italian Fascism earlier that year (The Conformist (1970)), Bertolucci here turns a short story by Jorge Luis Borges into a melancholy dirge for the memory of life under Italian fascism and the stories told in the wake of its fall. Produced for Italian television and shot in balmy, summer hues by renowned cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, The Spider’s Stratagem evokes a dreamy haze as its narrative weaves in and out of an elliptical structure, attempting to uncover the truth about one village’s most celebrated anti-fascist hero years after the war.
Admission proceeds will go to a local immigrant rights organization and to support Brown graduate student unionization.
