The statue of Columbus located near the intersection of Elmwood Avenue and Reservoir Avenue in Providence, was vandalized sometime before noon on the Monday holiday that bears his name. The statue was splashed with red paint and the words “Fuck Columbus” were added to the statue’s base.
“The Providence Police are aware of the vandalism and are investigating,” wrote Emily Crowell, communication director for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza in answer to a request for comment. “The mayor’s office is working, through Public Property, to remove the graffiti at this time.”
Columbus is a controversial historical figure. As I wrote here 3 years ago:
Christopher Columbus was a monster.
He saw people as commodities to be bought and sold. He destroyed lives for personal gain. His crimes include rape, murder, torture and genocide.
And today, many of us get to enjoy a beautiful Autumn day in celebration of the man who didn’t actually discover America.
Increasingly, many celebrate today as Indigenous People’s Day. The Pronk event held yearly in Providence on this date rejects the celebration of Columbus.
Channel 10 reported on a similar act of vandalism seven years ago.
Statues dedicated to Columbus were vandalized in other cities across the country as well. Three cities in Connecticut, Middletown, New Haven and Norwalk, and another in Little Italy in Chicago, were vandalized.
