"We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” - Elie Weisel

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." - Desmond Tutu

"There comes a time when neutrality and laying low become dishonorable. If you’re not in revolt, you’re in cahoots. When this period and your name are mentioned, decades hence, your grandkids will look away in shame." - David Brooks

    “Now we need Morgan Stanley to join us . . .” . . . ?

Really? If Morgan Stanley just divests in Invenergy all will be peachy keen? Doubt it.

This kind of strategy reeks of the “shareholder revolution”, “investor activism”, “capitalism will save us” path lined with primroses I’ve read about before on these pages.

“Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC acted as lead financial advisor to BioMed Realty, with Raymond James & Associates, Inc. also acting as a financial advisor in connection with this transaction. Latham & Watkins LLP acted as BioMed Realty’s legal advisor. Eastdil Secured Group of Wells Fargo Securities LLC, Citigroup Global Markets Inc., JP Morgan Securities LLC, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs acted as Blackstone’s financial advisors in connection with the transaction. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP acted as legal advisor to Blackstone.”

Blackstone is the parent company of BioMedRealty, which is the parent company of Wexford “Science and Technology”, which is just a real estate firm calling itself a “Science and Technology” company which will start off by taking 35 million from us before calculations for city services, badly underfunded city services, are factored in, like fire protection, etc., etc., etc., while we have an underfunded pension and a mayor who is trying to cut the number of personnel, all while we’re promising monsters like the Blackstone Group and Morgan Stanley big returns on their investment in a 290,000 square foot building that will cost the city residents how much in city services? This is just one building, too.

Morgan Stanley is working to make our cities poorer through their efforts to finance global securitized real estate markets and forcing us into contributing to the massive corporate welfare the neoliberal Democrats have sprung upon us not without help from the Republicans part of and not part of the Chafee/Rockefeller wing of the Republican Party that now controls the Democratic Party here.

These kinds of look the other way as long as we keep our demands narrow and avoid striking to the heart of the problem strategies may have appeal to church groups and those with something to gain through some of the wealthier non-profits around here but, personally, I just don’t think they will do.

Actually this is one project, not “just one building”. I think the Wexford complex will be more than one building but there are others owned by Chace, Proccacianti, Baccari, and so many others who it’s difficult to keep track of who seem to believe their singular purpose in life is to feed on the host known as the City of Providence.
