Help put President Obama on the ballot in Rhode Island!

This morning Obama for America – Rhode Island volunteer Jeff P. filed President Obama’s “Statement of Intent to Seek the Nomination for Office of President” with the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s office. Volunteers will now begin the process of gathering 2,500 signatures to put the president on the ballot in the Ocean State. Petitions must be filed with local city and town boards of canvassers by noon on Thursday, February 2nd, meaning the campaign has  just two weeks to collect the signatures of registered voters from across Rhode Island.

If you are interested in helping to collect signatures from friends, family, neighbors and supporters in your community RSVP here for our first signature gathering Day of Action THIS SATURDAY, January 21st. Volunteers will meet at OFA-RI HQ — 151 Broadway, Providence, RI 02903 (Suite 310).

    Let’s start here. How about closing Guantanamo Bay as he promised to do during the campaign? Why aren’t we demanding that?

    During his presidential campaign and the earliest days of his administration, President Barack Obama stressed, in eloquent and sophisticated ways, the urgency of ending so many of the outrages of the Bush administration’s “war on terror.” He specifically put to writing his promise to shutter its most symbolic component — the Guantanamo Bay prison, which opened 10 years ago today, Jan. 11, 2002.
    To the Arab world, where Guantanamo retains particularly ugly resonance, he promised in a well-received 2009 speech in Cairo that: “We are taking concrete actions to change course. I have unequivocally prohibited the use of torture by the United States, and I have ordered the prison at Guantanamo Bay closed by early next year.”

    Absent that, why should progessives support this administration? There’s something immoral in the logic that we should vote for an administration willing to trample human rights because we believe they are moderately more likely to preserve Social Security.
