“The challenge then is to find an assessment system…”
If that’s the case, then progressives have already lost this fight by adopting the same, flawed approach of finding ways to rank students, teachers, and schools rather than asking how to improve educational outcomes. To paraphrase Peter Scholtes, this is like being told that beating your head against the wall is harmful and then asking, yes, but if we remove the wall what will we beat or heads against?
I can’t say it enough. The challenge is not to find a kinder, gentler assessment system. It’s to improve the quality of education in the state. Perhaps you should ask yourself, what effect does assesment have on promoting students’ joy in learning? What affect does assessment have on garnering honest feedback for improvement?
