    Bob,

You can float out all the documents in 38 Studios you want but that doesn’t excuse Chafee calling Amalur a flop when it wasn’t and then saying he was doing everything possible to save this all in one news conference. He bungled this whole episode. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not letting Shilling off the hook but let’s face it, Chafee was blinded by an “I told you so” moment. It may still have ended the way it did but he is not clean on this whole episode. Every time I watch a Chafee interview, my head begins to spin because he can’t even utter a complete sentence and other times he just goes off the rails.

Great observation about the memorials vs. the firehouse cross, Bob. The crosses in public thing is very intriguing. On the one hand, keeping civic sites that function AS civic sites religiously neutral honors the pluralism of this country. On the other hand, would we really want to eliminate all those crosses that family and friends leave at the sites of drunk driving or other roadway deaths? It’s a semiotic issue. The cross alone might mean one thing, but the cross along the highway, with flowers and teddy bears at its base, means another, and the cross in a church yet another. In other words, the context of the crosses matters, as does the ritual significance of the cross.  This means that the legacy of what began as a Roman torture method – a line of symbols along the Appian way to warn of Roman ruthlessness toward those who would defy her – morphed into a symbol of Christianity and the resurrection, and in its wake, a more generalized marker of memorials and/or cautionary warnings that people died in that spot. The exact same physical sign takes on different symbolic power depending on its context. It is important to keep this in view as the debate escalates.

“Speaking of John DePetro, he is inviting some interesting karma picking on Gov. Chafee’s 18-year-old son for having a party … the mean-spirited talk show host could find himself in a similar situation someday…”

    Isn’t that the truth!

Im not excusing Caleb Chafee, but the truth is he would have called the ambulance for the woman with alcohol poisoning if he wasn’t so afraid of the media attention.

He should have learned the first time. The second time around shows poor character and cowardliness.
