Friday evening’sEmergency Rally to Demand an Independent Investigation brought dozens of people concerned about the connections between President Donald Trump and his campaign’s ties to Russia out to Burnside Park in Providence Friday afternoon. Those in attendance demanded that Rhode Island Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse “refuse to give unanimous consent on any Senate business until there’s an independent investigation of the Trump Campaign’s ties to Russia.”
There were calls for a special, independent prosecutor to take the lead on the investigation, something Reed has publicly supported but Whitehouse has withheld his support for. Whitehouse does support an independent investigation, but it seems he doesn’t quite trust his Republican Senate colleagues to produce robust legislation that would enable a special investigator to do the job of investigating Trump properly.
The rally, organized by Resist Hate RI, included a short speaking program, chanting and singing. A second rally demanding a special prosecutor, organized by Indivisible RI, is being organized for tomorrow at noon.
