Can’t agree more. We continue to dither over debates on taxing private citizens, already-taxpaying businesses, or what we’ve mostly been doing: cutting vital citizen services.

We’re ignoring the gigantic pink elephant in the room which is Brown University.

If we can’t get a private university that owns an obscene amount of the most valuable property in Providence to pay up, why do we bicker over the table scraps? No, we need to refocus on them again and again.

I can’t find complete records (DC doesn’t seem to have a listing of Property Taxes by Entity), but last account I can find is that my alma mater, The George Washington University, paid over $331.7M to Washington, DC’s government in property taxes in 2010.

Way to hit it out of the park on this one John.  Do you know why I love straightforward numbers? They don’t lie and are rather hard to spin.

I have been working on an article that I hope fires a shot right across the bow of this money making machine.  With your permission, I would like to reference your article in my own.

Without giving away the substance of what I am currently working on, I will say this.  At its fundamental level, Brown makes tons of money and uses this to buy up massive amounts of real estate.

Brown’s currently expanding empire in the city of Providence raises taxes on small private businesses and takes away real estate that could be used by businesses that would make “real” jobs and pay “real” taxes.

I understand this may not be enjoyable for many to hear on a progressive site in which many of the readers have ties to Brown.  However, you can’t criticize the hypocrisy of the right wing without owning up to the hypocrisy in your own back yard.
