A woman who called Georgia Representative Tom Price’s views on women’s health care, “disturbing and disgusting” asked Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse if he planned to vote to confirm Price as head of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
“I don’t think I’ve announced anything yet,” replied Whitehouse, “but I don’t think there’s a chance in the world of that happening. The guy’s in favor of voucherizing Medicare. That’s a dead end for me right there.”
“If you know who’s on Medicare,” continued Whitehouse, “the idea that you’re going to hand some of these people a voucher… Some of the are very elderly, some of them are disabled, some of them are alone at home or unconscious, some of them have dementia, and they’re supposed to be given a voucher and go out shopping for health care?”
Tom Price is Donald Trump’s choice to lead the DHHS. Whitehouse noted that Price, “had a pretty horrible” confirmation hearing. At that hearing Whitehouse warned Price that, “we throw [Obamacare] out at our peril. And [if] we throw it out with nothing to replace it, it’s like being asked to jump out of an airplane without a parachute and saying, ‘Trust us, we will build a parachute.'”
At the meeting with his constituents in Warwick, Whitehouse added, “He totally wants to defund Planned Parenthood… and by the way, Planned Parenthood has seen its membership and support surge.”
