This article is all speculation and light on the facts. If Mr. Winters’s rights were truly violated, then he can file a lawsuit.

The vast majority of URI faculty and staff and faculty are RELIEVED that Andrew Winters has left.  Andrew Winters was an advocate for himself, not students during his years at URI.  URI can move forward to support LGBT students rather than respond to the personal agenda of Andrew Winters.

What an absolute shame, such a shallow comment left by “speakinguptoday” you truly must not have known Mr. Winters, if so, you never would have made such a despicable remark.

I have been closely following through the Brown Daily Herald, and the Providence Journal, the situation involving the rather shameful departure of Andrew Winters from the University of Rhode Island. The incidents described by The Herald and articles in The Journal, are in need of corrective action, along with an investigation so nothing like this can happen again.

I have personally witnessed the hostile environment at URI, which can be at times scary and yes, very homophobic. I remember many nights leaving the GLBT center, only to be called names and have rocks thrown at me.

Andrew Winters worked in a tireless effort to ensure, develop, and create a safer more open campus environment at URI, with little support from the administration. On more than one occasion I remember Mr. Winters using his personal expenses, so the students would have a fun activity, some of the most noted a yearly trip to Provincetown, Gay Bingo (which he would always provide transportation for those whom didn’t have it), conversation groups, and the Annual LGBT symposium which would give the student and public community a vastly different view on gay culture, allowing them to be educated on topics such as societies view or gay history just to name a couple.

Now, on the heels of the 2012 LGBT Symposium, Mr. Winters’ long standing career of advocacy has been destroyed. The programs he helped to develop and create have been handed to his replacement, without due recognition. It is now extremely clear that Mr. Winters’ public advocacy for GLBT students’ has led to him being bullied out of a position in which he did so much to help the student community.

Where is the public outcry? Where is the activism we’ve seen among other campuses nationwide that go against the grain, to snuff out fires like this? While URI faculty have requested an investigation, The Student Senate and The Good 5 Cent Cigar (the student newspaper) default to the administrations shallow excuse….”It’s a confidential personnel matter.” In town a URI administrator had personally warned me to “stay out of it, don’t get involved.” Rhode Island is in danger of losing a true pioneering advocate, and strong supporter of equality.

Please feel free to join the facebook page I made in support of Mr. Winters, we must get the word out, that NOTHING like this should happen to anyone. If it could happen to Mr. Winters, whom will it happen to next.

It is not “extremely clear.” It is the opposite of clear. All we have is your wild speculation, supported by nothing.

I just heard of this.  I’m sorry, Mr. Nightingale, possibly Dr. Nightingale, but Andrew Winters was horrible.  He was unprofessional, personally vindictive and emotionally abusive.  Perhaps as a professor(?) you never saw what we students did, but there’s a reason the LGBTQA community suffered and it’s because the experienced Andrew Winters and avoided related activities thereafter to avoid him.
