“We are living in frightening times and it is important to us that you know that we all stand with the Muslim community. Freedom to worship is a fundamental American principle guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Religious pluralism is a strength and a source of pride for our state and our nation. Our state is stronger because of your presence here.”

“We’re here because our state government needs to step up,” said State Representative Aaron Regunberg. “That means doing more than taking a wait-and-see approach to Donald Trump’s millionaire and KKK-endorsed agenda. It’s our job to make sure that this agenda does not become normal here in Rhode Island, and we commit to doing everything we possible can to starting right now to protect Rhode Island values and Rhode Island families.”

“The backlash of these atrocious attacks have been felt deeply in the Muslim community nationwide. Inflammatory rhetoric as demonstrated by some politicians to isolate and marginalize American Muslims is reckless and undermines the safety and security of our great nation,” Ansari continued, before adding, on a positive note that, “the American Muslim community in Rhode Island has unprecedented support from public officials, law enforcement, faith community and fellow citizens and we deeply appreciate this support.”

The one thing that virtually everyone who attended last night’s forum, Understanding the Israel/Gaza Crisis, is that the subject is extremely difficult to talk about without extreme emotions hijacking the discourse.
