DSC_2694Too often we in Providence, and more broadly we in Rhode Island, react to the gun violence tearing apart our communities as an issue specifically confined to the inner city.

The problem does not impact the vast majority of us, because we don’t live in the projects, and our concern is only brought to bear if the victim tugs at our hearts, as in the case of Aynis Vargas, the twelve year old killed last year at a party outside her apartment or if the crime is particularly careless and violent, as in the drive by shooting that rocked the Chad Brown section of Providence last Tuesday night. Five people were hospitalized, fortunately no one was killed.

DSC_2675The problem of gun violence in our neighborhoods is a problem for all of Rhode Islanders. The safety of all our children is of paramount importance, and in a state so small there is no way to pretend that the problem is too far away or too intractable for us to make a difference. If Rhode Island can come together as one community with a willingness to make real, substantive changes in the way we deal with poverty, crime, violence and guns, we can and will improve the lives of all our brothers and sisters.

DSC_2853I was pleased to hear about Diana Garlington’s Community Cook-Out for Non-Violence, held in the Chad Brown Projects and described as “an informal event” where “anyone whose life has been impacted by violence will have the opportunity to speak” and”everyone is invited.” I was pleased to see people from South Providence, the East Side and other parts of Providence gather in peace and celebration at an event where children were playing, neighbors were laughing and food was shared.

DSC_2791Officers were on hand from both the state and Providence Police, and of course, this being an election year, the candidates were out pleading their cases to the crowd. Mayor Taveras made a last-hour appearance and spoke briefly to the crowd. Sighted at the event were mayoral candidates Brett Smiley, Michael Solomon and Jorge Elorza. In addition to Taveras, gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo and candidate for State Secretary Nellie Gorbea were the statewide candidates in attendence. Several members of the Providence City Council and some of their opponents were on hand as was House candidate Aaron Regunberg, but conspicuous by their absence were the vast majority of the General Assembly, including Speaker Mattiello and Senate President Paiva-Weed. Under their leadership the General Assembly seems unable to acknowledge, never mind deal with the issue of gun violence.

DSC_2725But this was not a political event. This was a community event, designed to bring people together in peace so as to begin changing the conversation around violence and community. Several times people told me that events like this need to be held on a regular basis, not just in reaction to some tragic event. Moreover, leaders and members of communities throughout Rhode Island need to start making time in their schedules to attend these events. It’s only by going to these events and meeting the residents that we can learn that the people here want exactly what we all want: a safe place to raise our children.

This was a great event, and I hope to cover more of these, under better circumstances, in the future.

Charles, 10 year Burger King employee

With a last minute change of location from the Dunkin’ Donuts on Broad St. in Central Falls to the Burger King on Lonsdale Ave., Jobs with Justice launched their fourth action for $15 an hour and and unionization for fast food workers. Burger King management kept the doors to the restaurant locked but they couldn’t stop the voices of workers demanding fair wages for long hours of work. Towards the end, Charles, a ten year employee of Burger King, spoke briefly about the impossibility of supporting oneself on the paltry wages on offer. The next event is at noon in Warwick, I’ll have pictures from that event soon.

Bring Back Our Girls rally: pictures and video

Bring Back Our Girls 7153Yesterday I said that the #BrigBackOurGirls rally held at the State House “transcends religion, race and politics, so anyone and everyone should come” and it seems like everyone who could come did. At least two hundred people turned up to support our local Nigerian community in their efforts to send a clear signal to the United States government and to the world that the kidnapping of nearly 300 girls by the terrorist organization Boko Haram.

Politicians and representatives with a vast array of different ideas about government and religion came together. I saw Ed Doyle, Brett Smiley, Doreen Costa,  Harold Metz, David Cicilline, Angel Taveras, Clay Pell and many more office holders and candidates united behind a single cause. At that rally we were not divided by our ideologies, we were united by our humanity.

There are still ways to help. As I said yesterday:

You can go to the Whitehouse.gov website and sign the petition demanding the White House work with the UN and the Nigerian government to bring home the girls kidnapped by Boko Haram. Let other people know on social media that you signed the petition and that they should too. (I’m signer #21,961.)

While you’re on the Internet, playing around with social media (and using the #bringbackourgirls hashtag), take a picture of yourself with a sign that says any one or more of the following: “#bringbackourgirls”, “Devuelvan Nuestras Niñas”, “Real men don’t buy girls” or “#bringbackourgirls” in another language. Some people are putting their petition signature number on the sign while they’re at it.
Then you could write to your Senator or Congressperson to let them know that you want action taken on this issue. Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse, David Cicilline and Jim Langevin are standing by, eager to take your calls and/or read your emails.

Here’s hoping that yesterday’s double rainbow signals an end to the very wet June that gardeners have enjoyed at the expense of beach bums.

Rhode Islanders United for Marriage didn’t get to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a same sex wedding, but the broad-based grassroots group did open a new operations center so it can continue to effectively advocate for it. In addition to freelancing for the New York Times and RI Future, I’m also a wedding photographer and I’d really like to shoot the first same sex marriage in the Ocean State.

Heron Rests on Greenwich Cove After Blizzard

Just like all my human neighbors are outside clearing the snow off of their lives, so too were the birds of Greenwich Cove this morning.

I haven’t seen a blue heron since the fall, but evidently this youngster got snowed out of his winter hiding spot. He was hanging out by this old granite arch railroad bridge, built around the 1840’s, to cross over the Maskerchugg River.

Notice the heron in the bottom left hand corner.

Unlike my human neighbors shoveling their driveways, the heron didn’t want to be social this morning. In this picture, he’s flying away right in front of me.

The heron is flying across the bottom of the picture.

He didn’t make it very far though, and actually spread eagle (spread heron?) into the snow bank on the other side of the river. Here he is after getting back on is feet after a few seconds of being stuck on his chest. I’m guessing his wings were a little bit frozen over.

The heron is back on his feet.

Here’s the stone arch with the heron on the other side now.

The heron is now on the right side of the picture.

The heron wasn’t the only bird I bugged on my morning snowshoe; I also scared these Canada geese and ducks away from the spot on the Cove.

In case you couldn’t make it out last night during the height of Nemo, Graham Wheeler got out there for you and shot this pretty cool 360-degree panoramic picture from Kennedy Plaza at about 2 a.m.
