Students, faculty try to sever PC’s relationship with Renaissance Hotel

Providence College students and faculty plan to leaflet campus tomorrow to draw attention to the school’s continued relationship with the Renaissance Hotel, one of the downtown hotels engaged in a bitter labor dispute with employees trying to unionize and win better wages.

“Consistent with our social values, the group wants PC to refrain from doing business with the Renaissance Hotel until management grants workers a fair process to decide on unionization,” said a press release from PC sociology professor Cedric de Leon.  “This means removing the Renaissance from the list of discounted hotels advertised on the PC website for Reunion Weekend, May 29-31, and telling alums why.”

de Leon has led an effort at the Providence College to stop doing business with the hotel because owner The Procaccianti Group “has a track record of mistreating Renaissance workers in a manner inconsistent with Catholic social teaching,” said the press release. “In 2007, U.S. Catholic Bishops wrote, ‘Catholic social teaching supports the right of workers to choose whether to organize, join a union, and bargain collectively, and to exercise these rights without reprisal.'”

In a subsequent interview, de Leon said, “We’re going to turn up the heat on the administration.” It’s unjust that Providence College boycotts sweatshop labor abroad but endorses poor labor relations in its host city, he said. “We won’t sell sweat shop clothing but the Renaissance Hotel is, for some reason sacred.”

Last year more than 200 faculty and students signed a letter expressing their desire to not do business with the Renaissance Hotel, but school administration declined to act upon the request, de Leon said.

Not only will the group leaflet campus on Wednesday, but they also plan on asking Rev. Gustavo Gutiérrez, a liberation theologist, about PC’s support of a hotel mired in a labor dispute with employees when he visits campus on Monday to receive an honorary degree.

A Providence College press release describes Gutiérrez: “A native of Peru, he is best known for his 1971 book, A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, and Salvation, which advocated for supporting the poor in protests against poverty and in attempts to be liberated from exploitation.”  The Economist describes liberation theology as “an ideological movement that emerged in Latin America in the 1970s and sought to combine Catholicism with revolutionary socialism.”

On Wednesday, April 22 at 12:30pm, students and faculty at Providence College will leaflet four major stops on the visitor tour circuit: Harkins Hall (the main administration building), Phillips Memorial Library, Raymond Hall (the main dining hall), and Slavin (the student center).

PC continues to do business with the Renaissance Hotel even though the hotel’s owner, The Procaccianti Group (TPG), has a track record of mistreating Renaissance workers in a manner inconsistent with Catholic social teaching. In 2007, U.S. Catholic Bishops wrote, “Catholic social teaching supports the right of workers to choose whether to organize, join a union, and bargain collectively, and to exercise these rights without reprisal.”

TPG, however, has been the subject of two federal enforcement actions at the Renaissance in the past two years: first, by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for unsafe working conditions; and second, by the National Labor Relations Board, for workplace intimidation.

On March 26, 2013, a majority of Renaissance workers presented the hotel manager with a petition requesting a fair process to decide on unionization. Instead of granting workers a fair process, TPG has responded with an aggressive and illegal anti-union campaign, involving what the federal government itself has called “interrogating employees about their union activities.”

Despite all this, the administration has resisted joining the boycott. When Renaissance workers came to PC, asking to suspend business with the hotel, the administration had them escorted off campus. Later, when PC students and faculty presented administration with 200+ signatures urging the College to boycott the hotel, they said there was “no compelling interest for Providence College to advise the families of our students and our alumni to avoid using the hotel.”

Consistent with our social values, the group wants PC to refrain from doing business with the Renaissance Hotel until management grants workers a fair process to decide on unionization. This means removing the Renaissance from the list of discounted hotels advertised on the PC website for Reunion Weekend, May 29-31, and telling alums why. Brown University and other organizations have already taken this principled step.

The group is also asking those concerned to email President Fr. Brian Shanley at bshanley@providence.edu to say that there are plenty of Providence hotels for our alumni to choose from and that the Renaissance should not be one of them.

tax day 039On April 15th, Providence became one of over 200 cities to participate in a “National Day of Action to Fight for $15.”

In a two hour march through downtown Providence, nearly 100 workers and activists visited businesses engaged in wage theft, low pay and anti-unionization efforts. The event was organized through Rhode Island Jobs with Justice in collaboration with Restaurant Opportunities Center of RI (ROC-RI), Fuerza Laboral, Carpenters Local 94, SEIU Rhode Island, UNITE HERE Local 217, Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE) and IUPAT Local 195 DC 11 Painters.

The groups are “seeking a city ordinance that would require all companies getting tax breaks in Providence to pay workers a living wage of at least $15/hr, provide paid sick days, health benefits, and fair, predictable schedules.” They also want the city to “follow the First Source ordinance by hiring residents of Providence, prioritize hiring people from high poverty neighborhoods, and make sure that people working these jobs have a pathway to a real career by using apprenticeship programs.”

tax day 040The groups are also asking Mayor Jorge Elorza to live up to the campaign promises he made while still a candidate at a mayoral forum in South Providence, “to set up a community board with the power to approve/disapprove projects, take back money if companies aren’t living up to what they say they’ll do, and negotiate the construction of projects community members identify as needs, such as affordable housing, or fixing up an abandoned lot into a park.”

The Providence Police Department cleared the streets ahead of the marchers, who started their protest outside of Gourmet Heaven  on Weybosset St. This is the third time protesters gathered outside the restaurant, which is accused of stealing wages from employees here in Rhode Island in a situation similar to Connecticut where substantial fines have been levied against the company for wage theft. Two workers addressed the crowd, and spoke about the abusive working conditions they say they endured. One worker said he was told, when he demanded his pay, that if he complained the management would have him deported.

The marchers then walked a short way up the street to Cilantro restaurant, a chain recently fined by the US Labor Department for wage theft to the tune of $100,000. Oddly, a Cilantro worker met the crowd, offering tortilla chips and bottled drinks, which were refused. “We don’t want your crumbs, we want our money,” quipped Michael Araujo of ROC-RI.

The march then continued across the city to the Providence Hilton Hotel, owned by The Procaccianti Group, where hotel workers were already outside picketing. The two groups merged into a protest of well over 150 people. The workers at the Providence Hilton announced a worker-led boycott of the hotel, joining the boycott efforts of workers at the Renaissance Providence Hotel (also owned by Procaccianti Group.) Employees from the Omni Providence Hotel were also on hand to support the boycott effort.

City Councillor Carmen Castillo spoke to the crowd about her experiences working at the Omni Providence Hotel, which was owned by the Procaccianti Group when it was called the Westin. Since the Procaccianti Group sold the hotel, worker conditions have markedly improved. Also speaking to the crowd was hotel worker Santa Brito.

The protest then headed for the Providence City Hall, stopping along the way at the Subway sandwich shop attached to the skating rink. Here Jo-Ann Gesterling, a fast food worker from Wendy’s, spoke to the crowd. Gesterling has led previous at her store and was arrested last year in Hartford CT during a Fight for $15 protest there. Gesterling talked about the importance of raising the minimum wage to $15, and about the effort to improve working conditions at her restaurant.

The final stop of the march was Providence City Hall, where Malchus Mills of DARE called on Mayor Jorge Elorza to honor his campaign commitments and enforce the First Source ordinance, which prioritizes city hiring from Providence communities. Mills also called upon the City Council to demand fair wages and benefits for workers from companies seeking tax stabilizations from the city. Also speaking at the City Hall was Jeffrey Santos, member of Carpenters Local 94.

Hotel, fast food workers stand up for rights in RI

hilton 1stamend rallyThere’s a bit of low-wage worker uprising happening here in Rhode Island.

Hilton Providence employees are holding an action to support their coworkers who were they say were fired for speaking out about the need for a labor union. A tweet from Unite Here 217 organizer Andrew Tillet-Saks called it a “Funeral for US Constitution to protest mass firings.” On Monday, Steve Ahlquist interviewed Adrienne Jones, who said she was fired from the Hilton Providence for speaking out. On Tuesday it was learned two employees were fired for speaking out about the work conditions at the downtown Providence hotel and seven others were disciplined.

And on Tuesday, the Rhode Island fight for $15 an hour for fast food workers moves from a Wendy’s in Warwick to a McDonald’s in Providence, where activists (I’m not sure about workers yet) will protest in solidarity with the McDonalds workers in California, Michaigan and New York are suing the corporation saying they were “illegally underpaid employees by erasing hours from their timecards, not paying overtime and ordering them to work off the clock.”

DSC06791Over a hundred people organized a picket line in the cold and slush outside the Hilton Hotel in downtown Providence Tuesday evening to demand that The Procaccianti Group begin treating their employees properly, pay fair wages, and not interfere in the worker’s right to form a union.

Originally announced as a a “civil disobedience” action at the Renaissance Hotel by the State House, the focus of the picket was changed when 70% of the employees at the Hilton signed a petition, declaring their intent to unionize. The Procaccianti Group manages both hotels.

DSC_9268The Federal Government has cited the Renaissance Hotel twice: First, OSHA cited the Renaissance for workplace hazards and the Hotel settled, agreeing to pay $8,000 in fines. Second, the General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board has issued an Unfair Labor Practice complaint against the Renaissance and its parent, The Procaccianti Group. After an eight-month investigation, the NLRB Complaint named thirteen different hotel managers and alleged multiple acts of interfering with, restraining and coercing employee organizing rights at the Renaissance, including interrogation. A trial is set for March 31 in Boston.

At the Hilton Hotel, I watched as a group of hotel employees attempted to deliver the petition to the hotel management, only to be barred entry by members of the Providence Police Department. At least one police officer had zip tie handcuffs hanging off his belt, perhaps in anticipation of any civil disobedience that might crop up. However, the action was completely peaceful and well mannered, if loud and boisterous.

Several speakers took turns at the megaphone. A woman named Krystle talked about having been terminated because she advocated for her right to form a union. She also talked about the terrible treatment pregnant women receive at the hands of hotel management. In her written statement she said, “I was working in the restaurant then as a busser.  Management would pressure me to work faster.  They never offered to help me lift the heavy bins of dirty dishes.  I went into pre-mature labor twice.  I was treated like a machine, not a human being. It was outrageous.”

Speakers included Providence City Councilpersons Carmen Castillo and Luis Aponte. Aponte talked about the tax breaks the Hilton receives from the city. “You’ve done well in this city,” said Aponte, “Do good by your workers.” Castillo, in addition to being on the Providence City Council, is a worker in the hotel industry, at the Omni Hotel. She was at the protest to lend her support to the Hilton and Renaissance Hotel workers.


As much as the speeches by the politicians in support of the workers were welcome, it was the voice of the workers, speaking for themselves, that really invigorated the crowd. As the speakers spoke in English or Spanish, their words were translated, but even if you didn’t speak the language, you knew what they were saying. These are decent, hard working people who want to be treated properly, paid fairly, respected on the job, and live their lives with dignity and purpose. They are not simply replaceable cogs in The Procaccianti Group machine, they are human beings and they deserve, and on Tuesday night they demanded, to be treated as such.

Labor Board sets trial date for Renaissance Hotel dispute

Regional Director Jonathan B. Kreisberg of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) out of Boston “issued a Government complaint and notice of hearing against the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel and TPG Hospitality, Inc., The Procaccianti Group’s hotel management affiliate. The NLRB Complaint charges the Hotel with multiple unfair labor practices deterring workers from organizing to improve their low wage, low benefit jobs,” according to a press release on the Joey Quits blog late Friday.

Representatives of the hotel workers’ union asked the Hotel to resolve the case by being neutral. The Hotel has refused. A trial before a federal labor judge is scheduled for March 31, 2014 in the NLRB’s Boston office.

The Government complaint names thirteen different managers, including Elizabeth Procaccianti and Hotel General Manager Angelo DePeri.  The NLRB Complaint alleges multiple acts of interfering with, restraining and coercing employee organizing rights, including interrogation and illegal promises of benefits to induce workers to abandon union organizing. The NLRB Complaint cites The Procaccianti Group’s TPG Hospitality affiliate for maintaining illegal work rules nationwide, including rules restricting communications and prohibiting employees from speaking to the media and the public about their jobs.

This NLRB Complaint comes after OSHA cited the Hotel in October 2013.  The Hotel ultimately settled with OSHA by agreeing to correct the workplace hazards and paying $8,000 in fines.

Julian Bello, a houseman at the Renaissance, said: “This is now the second time the Federal government is citing the Hotel for violating our rights.  Why does it think it is above the law?”

Citing the Hotel’s coercive anti-union campaign, sweatshop workloads and sub-living wages, the workers called for a boycott of the Hotel on December 4, 2013.  While the law gives Hotel managers the right to force workers into mandatory anti-union meetings, the law does not force the public to patronize their Hotel.

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has already canceled over 800 rooms they had reserved for their General Assembly convention, to be held in Providence in June 2014. Jan Sneegas, the UUA’s director of General Assembly and Conference Services, said, “The Unitarian Universalist Association is strongly committed to the fair treatment and equity of all employees in the workplace. When a labor dispute arises, it is our policy to review our contract with that company.  In this instance, the UUA decided to terminate the contract.”

Renaissance workers currently make significantly lower wages and benefits than their counterparts in union hotels like the Omni Providence Hotel. The Procaccianti Group, has owned, developed or managed over 100 hotels nationwide and claims real estate assets exceeding $5 billion nationwide.
