Marino Cruz, a 35-year-old houseman at the Providence Renaissance Hotel, was called into his manager’s office last Wednesday and told that he was being fired.

Cruz objected, and argued with management about the reasons for his termination. “Their story kept changing,” he said, “and when they fired me, they accused me of more things. They tried to get me to admit to false things.”

The real reason the hotel management wanted him fired, claims Cruz, is because he is a leader in the effort to unionize hotel employees for fair wages and decent working conditions.

The meeting to fire Cruz soon reached a breaking point. “The combination of shock and excitement gave me a small heart attack, so they [the management] called me an ambulance to the hospital,” says Cruz.

At Rhode Island Hospital, where PVD emergency services brought him, the doctors found that there was damage to Cruz’ heart and they kept him for just over 24 hours, running further tests. Cruz is awaiting the results.

Marino Cruz does not speak much English, and I speak no Spanish, so our interview was conducted with the help of an interpreter. He’s worked at the Providence Renaissance Hotel for three years, and has three children. Fortunately for Cruz, his wife’s job provides health care for the family.

While he was in still in his hospital bed, two Providence police officers entered with Cruz’ wife and presented him with a restraining order from hotel management. He’s due in court on December 18. This is why nearly 30 people picketed outside the Renaissance Hotel last Thursday in the pouring rain.

“They’re trying to take me out of the fight,” said Cruz. A restraining order will keep Cruz off the picket line and away from hotel employees. “I couldn’t imagine that they would put me out on the street just for fighting for justice.”

He said, “the situation at the hotel is getting uglier.” Employees are not only suffering from low wages, excessive workloads and copious injuries, he said, they also suffer “the disrespect of the management” that treats people as replaceable and disposable.

At the Providence Renaissance Hotel, housekeepers, mostly women, are worked hard. They are responsible for cleaning more rooms in a day than housekeepers at other area hotels, and they are paid much less, minimum wage or pennies more. Injuries to the back, shoulders and hands are affecting more than half a dozen workers. Some have rashes on their faces and skin from the harsh chemicals used to clean the rooms. There is “an epidemic of women’s bodies just giving out with permanent injuries,” Cruz said.

As one of the few leaders of the unionization effort not injured, Cruz has been vocal about these issues in meetings with management. Cruz believes that this is why management decided to target him. When he’s punched in, Cruz does his job. When he’s off duty, he organizes, pickets and strategizes ways to improve working conditions at the hotel.

DSC02956The Providence Renaissance Hotel is run by The Procaccianti Group, which also manages the Providence Hilton. They have a long history of treating employees less than fairly. In March I profiled Adrienne Jones and Krystle Martin, two single moms targeted and fired for their unionization efforts. In May I reported on how the hotel lost its gay-friendly rating. The Procaccianti Group was one of the key lobbyists pushing through the state ban on minimum wage increases by cities and municipalities. The Renaissance is currently being boycotted by those committed to fair wages and working conditions.

DSC_5102Just in case anyone forgot, the hotel workers at the Providence Renaissance are still working for fair wages,  decent treatment and a union. The Procaccianti Group still refuses to negotiate with the workers and conditions at the hotel have not improved one bit.

Let’s also not forget that when the Providence City Council moved to allow voters in Providence to democratically decide whether or not to raise the minimum wage for hotel workers to $15, the General Assembly and especially the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Mattiello, passed a budget amendment to prevent cities and towns from determining their own minimum wages.

Business and government conspired to keep working mothers poor. Yet the hotel workers keep fighting and marching the picket line every Wednesday, demonstrating more character and humanity in two hours a week than the General Assembly musters all year.

PVD City Council considers hotel minimum wage bill tonight

Hotel Workers Providence City Hall 012As the Procaccianti Group moves ahead with plans for a new hotel in downtown Providence, employees at another one of its downtown hotels will take their fight for fair wages to the City Council tonight. Employees and activists are requesting the Council pass a $15 an hour minimum wage ordinance for local hotel workers.

The Providence City Council will hold a public hearing to consider the idea today at 6:00 pm.

“I hope the Providence City Council does what is best for the average working mother like me and passes this ordinance,” said Santa Brito, a housekeeper at the Renaissance Providence hotel. “As elections come around, it’s a perfect opportunity to see who’s in the pocket of big business and who actually stands with regular working people of Providence, people from the neighborhoods, people who vote and who they are supposed to represent.”

Hotel employees at two Procaccianti Group-owned Providence hotels – the Renaissance and the Hilton – have been fighting to organize a union for years. The effort gained global attention in 2011, when local brass band What Cheer Brigade played backup to Joey DeFrancesco quitting his job at the Hilton. This year the employee strife has moved to the Renaissance, where activists say two employees have been fired for publicly protesting for higher wages.

The Procaccianti Group, a property management company that owns and operates hotels globally, receives millions of dollars in tax breaks for the Renaissance hotel. Steve Ahlquist recently reported it lost its TAG accreditation for being LGBTQ friendly in 2013. The company would not comment on the matter. Today, the Providence Journal reports the Procaccianti Group would like to develop a third hotel in downtown.

“As a housekeeper in the Hilton Providence Hotel, I do grueling physical work and make only slightly above $9.00 per hour after eight years of service,” Hilton housekeeper Andrea Hernandez said. “On this paltry wage, I live paycheck to paycheck and can only afford the bare necessities. If I earned just $1.85 more per room cleaned, I could shop at local businesses and invest in my home. The whole city would benefit. There are hundreds of hardworking women like me in Providence hotels who deserve better. We hope the City Council will step up for working women in Providence.”

Last week Bob Plain ran a piece detailing how two leaders of the unionization effort at the Hilton Providence had lost their jobs. Now that number is three. I previously profiled Adrienne Jones here, and covered Friday’s union action here. This is Krystle Martin’s story.

Martin is funny and optimistic, with an easy smile and a quick wit. She comes from a family with a strong union and military background. Her grandmother was in the Telephone Workers Union and her father was in the Laborers Union. She’s a hard working single mom, part of the blue collar, working class that builds, protects and maintains this country. I seriously doubt that many people reading this would want to switch places with Martin, swapping the challenges of their lives for hers. She lives every day on the edge of extreme poverty, where a missed paycheck or a missed day of work can mean the difference between eating or not eating, sleeping in your home or being homeless.

Martin was first hired to work at the Hilton Providence Starbucks, but after a few weeks she was offered the chance to be a server in Shula’s 347 Grill, the restaurant above the Starbucks. For those unfamiliar with food service, this move offers the potential of a big increase in pay. Though being a barista at Starbucks can pay a few dollars more than minimum wage, working as a server in a nice restaurant can bring in much more money in tips, even though you might make less than $5 an hour without tips. Martin needed this opportunity because she was pregnant, and needed the money.

Instead of working as a server, however, after training Martin was given the task of delivering room service, bussing tables (which requires carrying between 35 and 45 pounds of dishes from the table to the dishwasher in back) and expediting orders. (Expediting is adding the final touches to a meal, such as garnishes, and grouping the meals together to be delivered to the guests.) Needless to say, the tips for these duties were not what Martin expected.

Lifting heavy bussing trays full of dishes is not an optimal job for a woman over six months pregnant, but when Martin objected she says, “I received sarcasm from management when I presented a doctors note that stated I couldn’t lift more than 15 pounds.”

After presenting the note, Martin says was approached by a fellow server holding a bucket of clean dishes.

“Can you hold this for me, Krystle?” asked her coworker.

Martin took the bucket of dishes, not sure exactly what was going on, but she was beginning to suspect.

“That’s fifteen pounds of dishes,” said her coworker, “that’s what we expect you to carry.”

Martin asked for light duty, but was denied. She went into preterm labor twice, at 26 and 34  weeks, but still the hotel would not accommodate her. Customers would stop Martin on the floor of the restaurant and ask her if she was okay being so visibly pregnant and bussing tables. Martin just smiled and shrugged it off. She needed the job and needed the money: complaining to customers was not going to help her keep her job. Keep in mind that these are often long shifts of 12 and 13 hours, and breaks were rare, never mind the fact that they are required by law.

Finally, perhaps reacting to the concerns of customers or perhaps having finally found some sense of decency, management deigned to put Martin on light duty which consisted of hostessing and what Martin calls “light” bussing. Light duty lasted for three shifts, because Martin went into labor 11 days early, and delivered a healthy baby girl.

A single mother, Martin could not afford to miss work. Also, the Hilton told her that she might not have a job if she came back to work in six weeks. So less than 48 hours after leaving the hospital where she gave birth, Martin was back to work at the Hilton Providence Starbucks. Here she ran into new problems.

“Before I gave birth and before I returned to work, I’d stated my intent to breast feed my daughter, and upon my return to work, I immediately stated that I was breast feeding my daughter and would need time to pump milk during my shift.”

Working 12 and 13 hour shifts, Martin never got more than two chances (15 minute breaks) per day to pump her breast milk, and despite the law saying that she should be given a secure and designated area for the purpose, she was forced to pump her breast milk in the restroom of the coffee shop, “so that I wouldn’t be too far away from the store at the time.”

This is when serious talk of forming a union started to percolate among the hotel staff. According to Martin, “Management reprimanded us when we spoke out about mistreatment within our departments, inadequate working conditions, labor issues, unfair/illegal labor practices, tip theft and discrimination.”

Searching for a second job to supplement her income was also a difficult option.  Martin says was told that if she secured a second job she would have to tell the hotel management so that they could cut her hours.

“I told management that I was not going to tell them if I did get another job or not, because it was none of their business. I said that whatever I do with my time, while off the clock, and away from the Hilton is my personal life. It is my personal business, and it is not their concern. Management insisted that I was required to tell them if I got another job, because they didn’t want me working so much and intended on cutting my hours if I did.”

Of course, if the hotel paid decent wages and treated its employees with respect and dignity, workers like Martin might not need a second job.

On February 17 of this year, Martin says she was interrogated by her department manager, regarding “signatures.” It was obvious that management knew she was a member and leader of a union committee and was out collecting signatures from her coworkers with the intent of forming a union. The next day Martin says she was told by Hilton Providence Human Resources Manager Amanda Robataille that she was being suspended, pending termination. Martin says that Robataille had returned to work in early January after taking six weeks off for maternity leave.

Martin was suspended just four hours before the hotel worker’s first public action: the attempt to deliver a petition to the hotel management declaring the worker’s intent to form a union. Though delivery of the petition was rebuffed by Hilton management, a union was formed that day. Now the pressure needs to stay on The Procaccianti Group, the company that owns the Hilton, so that the union can be recognized and contract negotiations begun.

After the union action Martin was reinstated in her job, only to be suspended again a week later. As she awaits a decision as to whether or not this suspension is permanent, Martin has learned that the Hilton Providence has already run a job listing searching for her replacement. Effectively, she’s been fired.

“I am tired of not being able to afford both child care and rent, even though I work more than 30 hours a week,” said Martin. “Most of the days I work, I am working shifts in excess of 12 hours, without being able to take a break, because there aren’t enough employees on shift for me to be able to do so. I don’t receive welfare, housing assistance, WIC, or section 8. I live in a building that is contaminated with lead paint, but I am being told by other landlords and realtors that because I don’t have enough verifiable income, I’m unable to move into a new place. Because I don’t have a realistic and livable wage, I cannot afford to live in a healthy home, which my daughter, myself, and every other human being in the United States is entitled to.

“I am fighting for fairness and respect. I am fighting for the recognition of the hard work that workers do on a daily basis. I am fighting for fair wages, so that my coworkers and I can afford to provide for our families. More importantly, I am fighting to be allowed the ability to be the mother that my daughter needs and deserves.”

DSC_9785The first thing I noticed as I approached the Hilton Providence on Friday evening was the rented U-Haul truck parked conspicuously between the sidewalk where unionizing workers were staging their protest and the main entrance to the hotel.

The truck, placed so as to spare hotel management and guests the sight of underpaid and overworked employees advocating for fair wages and treatment, became a source of amusement and jokes among the protesters. When a gigantic 18-wheeler rumbled by emblazoned with a large “Teamsters” logo, chants of “We’ve got a bigger truck!” began, followed by laughter.

To highlight the abuse of workers rights alleged to take place at the hotel by the workers on the picket line, the protesters held a mock funeral for the United States Constitution. The document had a good run, said the protesters, only to be murdered by the Prociaccianti Group that owns and manages the hotel. Speaking in memory of the Constitution were Adrienne Jones, interviewed here at RI Future last Monday, and Krystle Martin, whose interview will be on this sight shortly, as well as many other workers and Providence Councilperson Carmen Castillo.

Since the unionization effort began, three union leaders have lost their jobs at the Hilton Providence and eight workers have been reprimanded, according to the organizers, so the Prociaccianti Group appears to be playing union busting hardball. Two of the fired workers, the aforementioned Jones and Martin, are single moms, leading some on the picket line to assert that the Hilton is targeting single mothers, who are more vulnerable economically. It’s hard to imagine more deplorable behavior.

Forming a union is an essential human right, and whatever efforts the hotel is undertaking to squelch the union is morally indefensible. The Prociaccianti Group is already bleeding business. The Unitarian Universalist General Assembly is bringing thousands of people to the Providence area this Summer, and they are not staying at the Hilton or the Renaissance (where workers are also batting for their right to unionize)  in response to the hotel’s treatment of its workers. More groups are sure to follow.

Meanwhile, local media, including the rapidly declining Providence Journal and local TV news continue to ignore the plight of workers fighting for their rights, leaving coverage of this developing story to the Brown Daily Herald and RI Future. Stories about real human suffering and economic exploitation are beneath their notice, it seems.

Hotel, fast food workers stand up for rights in RI

Hilton Providence employees are holding an action to support their coworkers who were they say were fired for speaking out about the need for a labor union. A tweet from Unite Here 217 organizer Andrew Tillet-Saks called it a “Funeral for US Constitution to protest mass firings.” On Monday, Steve Ahlquist interviewed Adrienne Jones, who said she was fired from the Hilton Providence for speaking out. On Tuesday it was learned two employees were fired for speaking out about the work conditions at the downtown Providence hotel and seven others were disciplined.

And on Tuesday, the Rhode Island fight for $15 an hour for fast food workers moves from a Wendy’s in Warwick to a McDonald’s in Providence, where activists (I’m not sure about workers yet) will protest in solidarity with the McDonalds workers in California, Michaigan and New York are suing the corporation saying they were “illegally underpaid employees by erasing hours from their timecards, not paying overtime and ordering them to work off the clock.”

DSC_9344Adrienne Jones isn’t the only one. According to a press release from Unite Here Local 217 two people have been fired from the Hilton Hotel in Providence for supporting an effort to form a union and several others disciplined. Nick Spino, who delivered room service, was the other.

“Since workers presenting management with their petition February 18th, management has terminated two public leaders for arbitrary reasons, suspended-pending-termination another, and issued arbitrary discipline to no less than seven workers at the forefront of the workers’ campaign for better jobs,” according to the release from Andrew Tillett-Saks.

The email said a follow-up action – a “‘mock funeral for the United States Constitution’ to bring light to the hotel’s trampling of workers’ freedom of speech” – involving “terminated workers, their co-workers, and other area hotel workers” is being organized.

Earlier this week, Steve Ahlquist reported that Adrienne Jones feels she was fired for supporting the effort to organize a union. Krystle Martin, a barrista at the Hilton Starbucks agrees.

“The company is firing many of us who they see as  leaders of the efforts to make these livable jobs,” she said according to the press release. “We shouldn’t be mistreated at work just because we want to have decent jobs. Bottom line, this is illegal but they think they’re above the law.”

DSC_9470Adrienne Jones says she was fired from her job at the Providence Hilton for supporting the effort of her colleagues to form a union.

She’s a lifelong Providence native and a graduate of Hope High School, CCRI and the Boston Bartending School. A divorced mom with a seven year old son, she has that easy gift of conversation and storytelling all the best bartenders have.

“I used to be anti-union,” says Jones, “I was a business student at CCRI, and in those classes we were taught that unions might have been necessary in the past, but that today modern labor laws provided more than enough protection for workers. My eyes have been opened. Now I’m fully committed to unions and fighting for worker’s rights.”

Jones has worked as a bartender for The Procaccianti Group (TPG) for the last 6 years. From March 2008 to October 2013 she worked at the Wyndham Garden in India Point, then moved to the Hilton Downtown.

“When I made the move over to the Hilton,” says Jones, “I was hoping to work 30-35 hours a week and be able to support myself more comfortably than I was at the Wyndham where I was only working about 20 hours a week. I was looking forward to making a vertical move and ending my dependence on state subsidized programs to help support my son and myself.”

Shortly after I making her move, Jones became aware of what she called “abhorrent” working conditions at the Hilton.

“I was made to work 15+ hour days without a break, over 50 hours a week,” she said. “Managers refuse to put shock absorbent mats behind the bar to make the long hours on our feet a little easier. Management would leave early on nights when we were unbelievably busy and we needed them most. I could go on just about the problems that happened in the restaurant alone…”

In her many years of working in the service industry, Jones has never witnessed a turnover rate as high as she has seen at the Hilton. High turnover is usually related to employee dissatisfaction, poor pay, unsafe or unhealthy working conditions, lack of promotion and career opportunities or conflict with management, among other reasons.

Jones is not alone in her feeling that employment conditions at the hotel were unfair and even illegal. “Recently, a housekeeper, who is pregnant with twins, brought in a note from a doctor asking her bosses to put her on light duty.  She expressed to her manager that she wanted to work until the end of her pregnancy so she could take her vacation time when the babies were born. However, management completely ignored her request and gave her even more rooms to clean per day.”

To the workers at the Hilton, this seemed like retaliation, and worse. “After all,” adds Jones, “if she quits before the babies are born, the hotel won’t have to pay for her time off, right?”

With complaints piling up about the unfair and abusive employment practices, the employees started to talk seriously about unionizing, to protect themselves and improve their working conditions. Jones found herself on the organizing committee for the union campaign currently going on at the Hilton.

“I have recruited several of my colleagues to sign the union’s petition and have attended committee meetings at the union office. On February 18, the union “blitzed” the hotel management by trying to present the petition, which 70% of Hilton employees signed, making the campaign public.”

Doug Koenig, the Hilton’s General Manager, refused to accept the petition, instead calling on the Providence Police Department and private security to bar union representatives from the hotel. Jones was unable to participate in that action because she was inside the hotel, working at the bar. The bar was extremely busy that night because there was a Providence College basketball game going on at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center next door. Event though she was not part of the union action that night, “It was obvious [to the hotel management] that I was a supporter,” says Jones.

Working part time at the Wyndham meant that Jones did not qualify to receive benefits. After three months working full time at the Hilton, however, she became entitled to benefits starting March 1st. “Three weeks paid vacation, health/dental/vision coverage and enrollment in their 401K,” says Jones wistfully, “benefits I have earned.”

Jones was terminated by the Hilton on February 26th, three days before her benefits kicked in. She thinks it was for supporting the union. They accused her of being late for a staff meeting which was scheduled on her day off.

“There had never been any issues with me in the past and this was the first time I had been in any kind of trouble at the Hilton,” she said. “It’s clear to everyone I worked with that I was terminated for being a Union supporter. I am the third person to have lost their job since then for supporting the Union.”

Despite laws that make it illegal for employers to fire workers seeking to form a union,  John Schmitt and Ben Zipperer, in a paper for the Center for Economic and Policy Research, estimate that almost one in seven union organizers or activists can expect to be fired as a result of their activities.

Jones has filed for unemployment and is waiting to hear back from the Department of Labor and Training regarding that. If she is denied, she will have to go through an appeal process before being eligible. In the meantime, she is searching for a new job and she and her son are getting by on her savings.

“I was born and raised in Providence. This is my home,” says Jones, “I want to be proud of being a Providence native, but I have been penalized for exercising my freedom of speech. I have filed a case with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and with the attorney for the Local 217. I am hoping to get my job back, be compensated for lost wages and receive the benefits I worked so hard for the past 6 years.”

Hilton and Renaissance hotel workers fight to unionize

DSC06791Over a hundred people organized a picket line in the cold and slush outside the Hilton Hotel in downtown Providence Tuesday evening to demand that The Procaccianti Group begin treating their employees properly, pay fair wages, and not interfere in the worker’s right to form a union.

Originally announced as a a “civil disobedience” action at the Renaissance Hotel by the State House, the focus of the picket was changed when 70% of the employees at the Hilton signed a petition, declaring their intent to unionize. The Procaccianti Group manages both hotels.

DSC_9268The Federal Government has cited the Renaissance Hotel twice: First, OSHA cited the Renaissance for workplace hazards and the Hotel settled, agreeing to pay $8,000 in fines. Second, the General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board has issued an Unfair Labor Practice complaint against the Renaissance and its parent, The Procaccianti Group. After an eight-month investigation, the NLRB Complaint named thirteen different hotel managers and alleged multiple acts of interfering with, restraining and coercing employee organizing rights at the Renaissance, including interrogation. A trial is set for March 31 in Boston.

At the Hilton Hotel, I watched as a group of hotel employees attempted to deliver the petition to the hotel management, only to be barred entry by members of the Providence Police Department. At least one police officer had zip tie handcuffs hanging off his belt, perhaps in anticipation of any civil disobedience that might crop up. However, the action was completely peaceful and well mannered, if loud and boisterous.

Several speakers took turns at the megaphone. A woman named Krystle talked about having been terminated because she advocated for her right to form a union. She also talked about the terrible treatment pregnant women receive at the hands of hotel management. In her written statement she said, “I was working in the restaurant then as a busser.  Management would pressure me to work faster.  They never offered to help me lift the heavy bins of dirty dishes.  I went into pre-mature labor twice.  I was treated like a machine, not a human being. It was outrageous.”

Speakers included Providence City Councilpersons Carmen Castillo and Luis Aponte. Aponte talked about the tax breaks the Hilton receives from the city. “You’ve done well in this city,” said Aponte, “Do good by your workers.” Castillo, in addition to being on the Providence City Council, is a worker in the hotel industry, at the Omni Hotel. She was at the protest to lend her support to the Hilton and Renaissance Hotel workers.


As much as the speeches by the politicians in support of the workers were welcome, it was the voice of the workers, speaking for themselves, that really invigorated the crowd. As the speakers spoke in English or Spanish, their words were translated, but even if you didn’t speak the language, you knew what they were saying. These are decent, hard working people who want to be treated properly, paid fairly, respected on the job, and live their lives with dignity and purpose. They are not simply replaceable cogs in The Procaccianti Group machine, they are human beings and they deserve, and on Tuesday night they demanded, to be treated as such.
