Good Samaritan 173“We applaud, and are deeply grateful to, the Senate for its quick action today in making the reinstatement of the [Good Samaritan Overdose Prevention Act of 2016] the legislative priority of the first week,” said Steve DeToy of the Rhode Island Medical Society, Rebecca McGoldrick of Protect Families First and Steven Brown of the ACLU of Rhode Island in a joint statement.

“Reinstating this law will save lives, and is an essential step in addressing the dire overdose epidemic Rhode Island is grappling with. Furthermore, it is a step in the right direction of how we should address drug use and addiction. For too long we have made it the task of the criminal justice system to address these issues, and this approach has been costly, ineffective, and destructive. It’s time that we handle drug use and addiction as a public health and medical issue and put saving lives above making arrests. The Good Samaritan bill makes major strides towards that goal by giving people in the community greater confidence that they will not be arrested if they seek medical care.

“In that regard, we are hopeful that in considering this legislation next week, the House will not only pass it speedily but will also consider expanding it to cover other drug-related offenses as well.”

The bill was introduced by Sen. Michael J. McCaffrey (D-Dist. 29, Warwick).”Identical legislation (2016-H 7003) submitted by Rep. Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown) will be taken up by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday at the rise of the House in Room 101 says a General Assembly press release. The bill exempts “from liability any person who administers an opioid antagonist to another person to prevent a drug overdose. It would further provide immunity from certain drug charges and for related violations of probation and/or parole for those persons who in good faith, seek medical assistance for a person experiencing a drug overdose.”

Governor Gina Raimondo is expected to sign the bill and also issued a statement. “The Good Samaritan Overdose Prevention Act of 2016 is an important tool to combat this public health crisis. Rhode Island’s response to the overdose crisis must first and foremost be focused on saving lives. I applaud the General Assembly for their action to encourage Rhode Islanders to call 911 in an overdose emergency.”

When Speaker Nicholas Mattiello abruptly ended the legislative session last year the Good Samaritan law was one of the most important and vital pieces of legislation not to pass. The original bill had a sunset clause, but has been so successful in saving lives its reinstatement was considered a given. Activists were shocked, lives were put at risk.

Mattiello considered having a special Fall legislative session to discuss the PawSox deal, truck tolls and the Good Samaritan Act, but that Fall session never came to pass.

Manuel Pombo
Manuel Pombo

The City of Providence can no longer stop musician Manuel Pombo from performing or soliciting donations on city streets as part of a settlement reached today in a First Amendment lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island.

See: ACLU sues Providence for violating street musician’s free speech rights

The ACLU of Rhode Island filed a federal lawsuit in July on behalf of Pombo, a 62-year-old saxophonist, who had been arrested once, and threatened with arrest on numerous other occasions, while playing his saxophone on sidewalks and street corners in Providence. His “permission to perform” license issued by the city also prohibited Pombo from soliciting donations for his performances, and it allowed him to perform solely at the unbridled discretion of police officers. The ACLU argued this violated Pombo’s free speech and due process rights.

As a result of today’s settlement, filed in U.S. District Court, the City of Providence can no longer order Pombo to stop performing on public property or require him to obtain a permit to perform on public property absent violation of any other valid ordinances. The settlement agreement further stipulates that “because soliciting donations is protected speech under the First Amendment,” the City cannot stop Pombo from soliciting or accepting donations for his performances. The City also agreed to pay compensatory damages.

The lawsuit was filed by ACLU of RI volunteer attorneys Shannah Kurland and John W. Dineen.

Kurland said today: “We appreciate that the City was able to work with us to acknowledge Mr. Pombo’s right to make music in public spaces. Let’s hope that going forward municipal government will respect the Constitution without people having to sue our own city.”

Attorney Dineen added: “Ben Franklin, who was a busker in his early days, will be glad to see that the First Amendment still has some life in it, although it takes a street saxophonist and the ACLU to keep it going.”

This is the third lawsuit in five years that the ACLU of Rhode Island has filed against the City of Providence for interfering with the exercise of free speech rights on City public property. Two years ago, a federal judge agreed with the ACLU that Providence police violated the free speech rights of a local resident when she was barred from peacefully leafleting on a public sidewalk in front of a building where then-Mayor David Cicilline was speaking. In 2014, the ACLU sued the Providence Police Department for violating the free speech rights of protesters at a fundraiser in Roger Williams Park for then-Gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo. That case is ongoing.

A copy of the settlement is available here: http://riaclu.org/images/uploads/Pombo_Settlement.pdf

2015-11-30 World AIDS Day 006 Jorge Elorza
Mayor Elorza

Here are the details of the multi-million dollar tax breaks Mayor Jorge Elorza and the Providence City Council are in the process of granting to corporate owners of existing properties even as the City Council weighs plans to increase taxes on Providence homeowners.

On December 1 of last year the City Council Committee on Finance considered four ordinances that would extend the existing tax stabilization agreements for Monohassett Mill LLC, Pearl Street Properties LLC and Pearl Street LLC, 60 Valley Street LLC and 166 Valley Street LLC on behalf of the Rising Sun Mills Project, and 100 Fountain Street.

STEP (Stop Tax Evasion in Providence) estimates the total cost of these deals to be in excess of $3 million. Mayor Elorza has expressed his support through Brett Smiley, his Chief Operating Officer, who spoke before the committee in support of these extended tax breaks here, here, here and here.

As STEP points out in their petition to garner public opposition to these tax breaks, “The construction jobs are long gone and these buildings have been occupied for quite some time.”

STEP will be delivering their petition to the Providence City Hall at 6:30 on Thursday evening.

Yesterday the Rhode Island Progressive Democrats (RIPDA) released footage of then candidate Elorza promising that the days of tax agreements with connected developers would be over in his administration. RIPDA maintains that the “deals pending before the city right now are even more egregious than usual. That’s because the development has already happened. There’s no question of encouraging development–the developers want their special tax deals to continue. This is just giving the city’s limited tax dollars to big developers.  Pure and simple.”

Clearly, Mayor Elorza has a lot of explaining to do to Providence taxpayers in order to justify their housing tax increases in light of his generosity to connected insiders.

RICAGV logoWe commend President Obama for his Executive Orders today to better protect Americans from the out of control epidemic of gun violence.

None of what the President ordered adversely affects the rights of Americans to firearms except for criminals or people with mental health issues that are prohibited from possession of a gun.  Private gun dealers and online firearms dealers who presently refuse to obtain a firearm dealer’s license will be required to do so and will now have to perform background checks for every gun they sell.  There will be an improved National Instant Criminal Background System (NCIS) greatly expanding the inclusion of mental health records of prohibited firearms buyers.  Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF&E) agents will be added to perform the increased demand for NCIS Background checks.   Firearms purchases by Federal Agencies will be directed to gun manufacturers who invest in “smart gun” technologies and who market their products in an ethical manner.

While the Gun Lobby will undoubtedly issue bombastic claims that the President’s actions violate our 2nd Amendment rights and are a slippery slope to gun confiscation none of that is true.  Over 90% of Americans and a large majority of gun owners support expanding Background Checks for every single gun sale.  Hopefully, these common sense measures will encourage a national debate that will lead to reforms that result in a reduction in the nearly 90 daily gun deaths each day in America.

We thank President Obama for standing up to the Gun Lobby and call on Congress to take meaningful action to protect American lives.

Elorza 002As a candidate, Jorge Elorza promised that tax deals would not be given out unless Providence could profit from the deal in some way. Mayor Elorza, however, seems intent on perpetuating the kinds of bad practices that lead inevitably to higher tax rates for home owners.

When the RI Progressive Democrats of America (RIPDA) were in the process of interviewing candidates for Mayor of Providence in search of the group’s endorsement, they took the liberty of recording the interviews. One of the questions that the group posed to then candidate Elorza was about Tax Stabilization Agreements (TSAs) which are essentially massive tax breaks given by the city to what it considers to be worthy investments. The idea behind TSAs is that a company might want to build in Providence, and in order to lure the company here, a tax break is given. This might spur building and development, and if used properly, is arguably a good idea.

However, in practice, these tax breaks are not doled out in ways that might spur growth or development, but are given out to developers who have back room connections to City Hall. It’s cronyism at its worst, and it costs Providence home owners directly, as their taxes are raised to cover the breaks given to insiders.

According to the Progressive Democrats, “The deals pending before the city right now are even more egregious than usual. That’s because the development has already happened. There’s no question of encouraging development–the developers want their special tax deals to continue. This is just giving the city’s limited tax dollars to big developers.  Pure and simple.”

Sam Bell, executive director of the RIPDA, said, “One of the things that really inspired us about Elorza when he was running was his commitment to crack down on the abusive culture of corporate welfare.  It’s very sad to see him change his tune now that he’s won.”

You can watch Elorza answer the question about TSAs below.

2016-01-05 Licenses 013When Governor Gina Raimondo was a candidate, she did not promise to partner with the legislature to work out a solution to the problem of undocumented workers and access to driver’s licenses. She said that she would issue an executive order compelling the DMV to begin issuing such licenses within her first year in office. In fact, she signed her name to that promise. Raimondo has two days to make good on her word, or it will be a campaign promise broken.

To remind her of her promise, members of RI Jobs With Justice, Fuerza Laboral, English for Action, the Providence Student Union and others rallied at the State House outside the House chambers, demanding that their voices be heard and that promises be kept. As Speaker Nicholas Mattiello puttered about inside the House chambers, metaphorically polishing his gavel and preparing for the new legislative session, advocates for licenses were lead in chants by Juan Garcia and shouted the Speaker’s name.

Mattiello ignored the protesters.

Overlapping with the “Licenses for All” rally was a “No Tolls” rally. This rally was made up primarily of conservative anti-tax groups. This coalition was protesting against the proposed truck tolls, which the tax groups feel are a slippery slope to car tolls. There was some friction when members of the anti-toll rally took issue with the undocumented workers agitating for licenses, with one angry man leading a small group in screaming, “Go home!” over and over again.

Later those rallying for licenses chanted, “We pay taxes!”

Speaker Mattiello told Gene Valicenti on WPRO that he didn’t, “expect to be moved” by the toll protest, and he seemed equally unmoved by the Licenses for All rally. One wonders what does move the Speaker if our democratic process and exercise of our First Amendment rights are so inconsequential.

Raimondo signs her executive order

Governor Gina Raimondo today announced the formation of the Rhode Island Outdoor Recreation Council, touting the health benefits of outdoor recreation and the value of pristine open spaces, even as environmental activists challenged her on her continued support of the fossil fuel industry in Burrillville.

Members of Fighting Against Natural Gas (FANG), Burrillville Against Spectra Expansion (BASE) and Fossil Free RI all attended the press conference in the freezing cold Goddard Park Carousel in Warwick, silently holding signs that said, “Save Burrillville.” After Governor Raimondo signed the executive order creating her new council, one member started chanting “No new power plant!” and was escorted from the room.

2016-01-04 Raimondo FANG BASE 16In a press release, Governor Raimondo said, “All Rhode Islanders should have the chance to enjoy the countless outdoor recreational opportunities in our beautiful state, and take advantage of these resources as they fulfill New Year’s resolutions and lead healthier lifestyles. Rhode Island’s natural assets are unmatched, with amazing beaches, parks, campgrounds, bike paths, the bay and waterways. The State can do more to encourage use of these resources and promote this critical sector of Rhode Island’s economy.”

Raimondo’s staff has not responded to a request to explain how increasing Rhode Island’s dependence on fossil fuels will make for healthy environments in the state.

Raimondo did not engage with the protesters, but exited quickly after the event. One member of FANG waited in line on stage for a chance to speak with the governor but was turned away. Pia told me, “I was very angry I got kicked off the stage and couldn’t talk to my governor even though I was next in line to do so.”

Director Nicole Alexander-Scott, MD, MPH, of the Rhode Island Department of Health and Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian did briefly engage. Among the protesters were Kathy Martley of Burrillville, who founded BASE, Sister Mary Pendergast and Sally Mendzela, who were arrested on Spectra property in December, Peter Nightingale who was arrested on Spectra property in August, and Nick Katkevich who was arrested on Spectra property in September.

In a statement Peter Nightingale said, “Fossil Free Rhode Island will continue to confront the Raimondo administration with the fact that natural gas is more dangerous for the global climate than coal and oil.  Fossil Free Rhode Island will not stand idly by as front line communities and Burrillville in particular are treated as sacrifice zones.”

I’ll have some video on this later today, and will update if the Governor’s office responds.

David Norton announces run for District 60 House seat in Pawtucket

David NortonDavid Norton, one of those most responsible for preventing the new owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox from moving to a proposed new stadium in Providence, has announced his intention to run for the District 60 House seat against incumbent Democrat David Coughlin.

“Today, I announce my candidacy for State Representative of District 60 Pawtucket,” said Norton in a statement, “I have many reasons for running for State Representative. My primary reason is the way in which Pawtucket was insulted and ignored by Rhode Island House Leadership during the PawSox fiasco.”

According to Norton, Rep. Coughlin, “has a total of $26 dollars in his campaign account. He has not held a fundraiser in years. He doesn’t attend events in Pawtucket. He has no presence and is not known by his own constituents in the community of District 60 Pawtucket.”

Norton went on to say,

“David Coughlin, essentially, was handed District 60’s seat by Rhode Island House Leadership. Let me be very clear on one point, the Rhode Island Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello, not David Coughlin, is in control of District 60’s seat, as is the case in so many other House Districts in Rhode Island.

“In the 2014 election, David Coughlin ran UNOPPOSED for House District 60’s seat, and was given a favored position on the powerful House Judiciary Committee as a freshman legislator, which is likely the reason that he votes as Speaker Mattiello tells him (as so many other Rhode Island legislators are forced to.) I would like to make clear, again, that this is the case in many other House Districts in Rhode Island.

“In reality, I will not be running against David Coughlin, because David Coughlin hasn’t got the resources, organization or independent leadership to run against me. The unfortunate reality is that I will be running against Speaker Nicolas Mattiello and the State political machine. Like so many other seats in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, the Speaker owns District 60’s seat by way of doling out favors in the form of legislative grants and favored committee positions, as is the case in District 60.

“The only way Speaker Mattiello can keep District 60’s seat as his own is to pour money into my opponent’s campaign. The only way the Speaker can hold District 60’s seat is to send an army of anti-McCoy Stadium door knockers or other House Leadership Members to invade Pawtucket to win this race for David Coughlin.

“I like David Coughlin. He is a nice guy, as far as I know. This isn’t personal: this is political. Politics is a fight. I am a fighter. I want the people of District 60 to have an independent voice at the Rhode Island State House. I want to be that voice.”

12185581_412189982307427_5350744200294324393_oSeveral months ago, a colleague and I were talking about the #BlackLivesMatter movement and he said candidly “Listen, I know this is probably racist if not insensitive but where is the issue of class in this whole thing?” That is not racist and it is not insensitive, it is common sense. White supremacy has always been a class-based project around, among other things, the exploitation of labor, that’s why it was first incarnated in North America as slavery, which gave the white supremacist free laborers, and genocide, which cleared the land for the white supremacist to labor on. To deny this aspect of the white supremacist project in and of America is akin to denial of the Nazi holocaust.

This has not gone unnoticed by others in the landscape. The #BlackLivesMatter movement has come to a critical crossroads that many forebears have also faced. To the Left is the embrace of a radical tradition of African thought and action embodied by thinkers like Angela Davis, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Malcolm X. To the Right is the Democratic Party and neoliberal identity politics, a post-modern miasma that will suffocate the radical spark and turn these activists into a youth caucus to be politely ignored in the name of the American imperial project. It has happened many times before, including the LGBTQQI and feminist movements, and is known as the place where all good radicals go to languish, die, and put on a suit and tie for ‘respectability’.

Hoping to avoid a repetition of this disaster once again, key figures in the radical African tradition have come together to hold a free conference at Temple University in Philadelphia, RECLAIMING OUR FUTURE: THE BLACK RADICAL TRADITION IN OUR TIME, from January 8-10. Featuring keynote lectures by Angela Davis, Cornel West, Vijay Prashad, Tony Monteiro, and others, it is hoped to radicalize and invigorate the movement in ways that will prevent it from being co-opted. Those interested in attendance can get more information via the event website here or the FaceBook page here.

But wait! If you are interested in the conference but cannot get down to the City of Brotherly Love, have no fear, Rhode Island’s Future has contacted the organizers and verified that they will be putting the proceedings on YouTube shortly. We will post the videos as they become available online and work to further publicize any materials related to the conference as they become available.

As a preview of what to expect, consider listening to the first segment on the weekly radio show Black Agenda Report wherein Glen Ford interviews Dr. Monteiro about the conference and its trajectory.

Concussion-movie-750x400While the rest of the planet has been going absolutely berserk over a galaxy far, far away, back on earth the new Will Smith film CONCUSSION (dir. Peter Landesman, 2015) has arrived with little fanfare and turned out to be as good an anti-capitalist/borderline-socialist film that Americans will find this side of the Cuban embargo. It is certainly not a perfect film, but I think it was a well-done effort.

This anti-capitalism can be attributed to the involvement of producer Ridley Scott, the man who brought us BLADE RUNNER, PROMETHEUS, THELMA AND LOUISE, and many other films. Scott is by no means a doctrinaire Bolshevik but, always near the surface in his films, there is a quasi-Marxist element that makes his pictures unique. ALIEN is a terrifying film in part because of the monster but also because the corporation financing the entire outer space operation has set it up that way. The director’s cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, a marvelous film that needs to be rediscovered immediately, is a retelling on the Saladin’s campaign to retake Jerusalem that shows a corrupt and banal Christian church as a pathetic arm of the medieval military-industrial complex. Almost every Ridley Scott film, even a bad one, has this populist version of a Marxist class war angle on the topic he is dealing with.

And so we come to CONCUSSION, a retelling of the plight of Dr. Bennet Omalu (Smith), the mild-mannered Pittsburgh coroner, a man who had no interest or grasp of what gridiron football is, that discovered the frequent blows to the head linemen take regularly when playing were resulting in long term debilitating illnesses. Beginning with a typical autopsy of Steelers player Mike Webster (David Morse), Omalu found an alarming pattern of brain damage that resulted in dementia-like symptoms several years after retirement. After publishing his findings in a neurological medical journal, Omalu found himself being scuttled by an all-powerful NFL that not only did not want to hear about it but were willing to go to any lengths to deny and denounce not just the research but the doctors, resorting to intimidation and taking advantage of connections within law enforcement.

Prior to viewing the film, I had watched the excellent PBS Frontline documentary LEAGUE OF DENIAL and, after screening the Scott film, read the original GQ magazine article that inspired this screenplay. Both pieces of journalism are excellent works and spare no blows for the NFL and the ridiculous Commissioner Roger Goodell who hemmed, hawed, covered-up, and absconded responsibility. Yet neither works were able to go the extra mile and adopt an anti-corporate spectrum that shows their behavior as symptomatic of capitalism. But here in CONCUSSION we have an anti-capitalist vision whose tone can be equated with the Victorian agitation against sweatshops and child labor, a tone to be found in Marx, Engels, and Dickens.

As said previously, the film is flawed. Will Smith’s portrayal is imperfect and the romance subplot is a tad annoying. There is an under-emphasis on the role of Goodell, a man who has overseen more scandals than imaginable. But even if the film clings to Classical Hollywood cinema motifs, perhaps it is possible to see the picture as a tribute to Frank Capra’s work. In this sense, we have a fantastic illustration of the way capital creates health hazards, well worth your time.

Raimondo Clear River presserThe Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) today filed a Motion to Dismiss with the Rhode Island Energy Facility Siting Board (EFSB) against “the application of Invenergy for a permit to build a new 900-megawatt (MW) fossil-fuel power plant in Burrillville, Rhode Island.”

In a blog post, Jerry Elmer, Senior Attorney at CLF in Providence said that the Motion “relies in part on the provisions of the Resilient Rhode Island Act, enacted by the Rhode Island General Assembly in 2014… The Resilient Rhode Island Act declares that it is the public policy of Rhode Island to reduce annual statewide carbon emissions to 10 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, 45 percent by 2035, and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2040.”

This is the first time the Resilient Rhode Island Act has been used in this manner.

“Invenergy’s application to the EFSB,” says Elmer, “is incomplete because the application fails to address these requirements.” The Resilient Rhode Island Act “created the EFSB and the EFSB’s own rules require that permit applications must be complete when they are filed, and that incomplete applications will be rejected.”

Elmer says that Invenergy’s application is especially troubling because the company, “wants to build two separate on-site oil tanks of one million gallons each – and, after coal, oil is the dirtiest, most polluting fuel used in New England to generate electricity…” More ominously, “Invenergy fails to mention how it plans to control any of its unhealthy air pollution, let alone its climate-warming carbon emissions.”

The CLF also explains in its motion, “why Invenergy is trying to stampede the EFSB into a hurried decision based on an incomplete application.”

Invenergy made a decision to take on a so-called ‘Capacity Supply Obligation‘ (CSO) from New England’s regional grid operator, ISO-New England, before Invenergy had any of permits required to build its proposed plant. The CSO means that, by June 1, 2019, Invenergy’s plant must be up and running and ready to supply energy to the regional grid.

“If Invenergy does have its plant operational by June 1, 2019, Invenergy gets tens of millions of dollars a year from the ISO-run energy markets in so-called ‘capacity payments.’ If Invenergy does not have its plant operational by June 1, 2019, the company stands to forfeit tens of millions of dollars of bonding it put up with the ISO.

“Not all companies that build power plants in New England choose to do things in that order. But Invenergy did – and now Invenergy should be forced to live with the consequences of its own decision.”

In a press release, Elmer said, “Spending 700 million dollars on a fuel source our own laws are making obsolete is as foolish as it is futile. New England is on a path to be carbon-free by 2050, and we have a legal and moral responsibility to see it through.”

Elmer asks interested members of the public to contact their leaders in government, such as Governor Raimondo, Nicholas Mattiello and Teresa Paiva Weed and let them know that you are opposed to the build up of fossil fuel infrastructure in Rhode Island.

Winners and losers of 2015

Winners-Losers-banner-2This year began with frigid cold and ended with Christmas in the 60*F range. In that span, all sorts of odd things happened but there were still some characters who will remain forever the winners and losers of the year

WINNERS

YOUR LOCAL VERIZON UNION WORKERS
These folks have been amazingly resilient and brave this year. For months now, Verizon has refused to budge and give them a fair contract. It is obscene to put working families through the holidays without a contract like this, threatening to put them on strike at any minute. We have previously covered this story in a series of posts that are worth your time reading. This standoff is one that could impact the future of private sector labor unions as severely as the forthcoming Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association will the public sector, with consumer safety and privacy on the line to boot. Remember next time you see your local Verizon worker to give her a hug, she deserves it!

RIC PRESIDENT NANCY CARRIUOLO
It was shameful and a loss for the State that Dr. Carriuolo was forced out of office by a crew of pusillanimous naysayers who were not brave enough to even come forward publicly, instead sending a semi-anonymous letter to the Journal and the Department of Education calling for the President’s ouster on the basis of hyperbole and silliness. The silence of President Emeritus John Nazarian is equally notable. Nonetheless, Dr. Carriuolo carried herself with dignity and grace that is sadly in short supply these days and from whom our Losers could learn much.

THE NATURAL GAS POWER PLANT OPPONENTS
Despite the support of our resident climate change spokesman Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who knows how absurd he looks in the midst of this, Rhode Islanders with half a clue have rejected this methane-belching monstrosity and refused to let up without a fight, going to jail and incurring fines in the process. With the recent example of Aliso Canyon in California showing just how badly a natural gas plant can go, luck might win out and change the tide.

LOSERS

LARRY LUCCHINO, THE PAWSOX, MAYOR DON GREBIEN, AND ANYONE ELSE STUPID ENOUGH TO FALL FOR THIS SILLINESS
For those of you who were living under a rock all summer, you missed one of the greatest public relations car accidents in recent memory. Not since a certain official was found diving into a dumpster for a bribe has Rhode Island seen anything this ridiculous. Lucchino bought the PawSox with the late Jim Skeffington expecting to play Rhode Islanders for suckers, get a taxpayer-funded stadium, and flip the team at a profit in five years. Of course, when Democratic Party insider Skeffington suddenly died, Lucchino was left holding the bag and tried to salvage his vulture capitalist sports hustle with a statewide “listening tour” featuring such notables as Dr. Charlie “Cheap Suit” Steinberg, Patti “What am I talking about” Doyle, and Syd “Vicious” McKenna that went over as well as a fart in church. Now we have the elected officials, beginning with Gina Raimondo and including Nicholas Mattiello, Don Grebien, and a host of more cartoon characters begging Lucchino to stay and promising tax monies to refurbish McCoy if they do. Folks, here’s a clue: if you think this is such a brilliant idea, get a job working for the stadium. You will have plenty of time to spend there when you get voted out of office over the first issue in decades that has united Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and everyone in between. There are plenty of poor people in this state, a boob like Larry Lucchino does not need our welfare unless he is selling shares in his team akin to how they do it in Green Bay. Of course, that kind of community investment is way above his yuppie pedigree, so there’s only one thing left to say: BUH-BYE!

THE CLINTON SUPERDELEGATES
Sen. James Langevin says that he respects Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy credentials, which I guess means the carnage of Palestinian, Libyan, Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi, and Afghani children that Madame Secretary oversaw in her disastrous and barely-there term at the State Department, committing war crimes and subverting the Arab Spring, the democratic uprising the region waited generations for, so we could all keep the oil flowing and the brown people down.
Rep. Joe McNamara, who had the Chairmanship of the Democratic Party handed to him by Tsar Nicholas Mattiello, says he trusts Clinton’s experience, meaning perhaps how she privatized and logged Arkansas state forests dutifully for her International Paper campaign donors.
Rep. David Cicilline says Clinton has proven she can get things done for working families, probably talking about the defenestration of the Welfare system under Bubba that she supported and getting money from the anti-union Walton family, owners of Wal-Mart, a company on whose board she sat.
I respect Lauren Niedel and other Bernie Sandernistas, but the reality is that the Democratic Party is not democratic and does not care about primaries, these folks were bought and sold years ago by Billary and do not care about their constituents. Even if the entire country votes for Chairman Bernie’s Great Proletarian Leap Forward, these folks will blow you off to serve their masters. When they do (there is no ‘if’ at this point), remember the moment well when you go to vote next time. And, considering that the Clinton campaign is going as well as passing a kidney stone, when Trump gets elected, remember to blame the superdelegates for that one also, perhaps every day for the rest of their lives.

ANYONE SILLY ENOUGH TO TRUST ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE MOVIE LISTINGS IN THE JOURNAL
Need I say more?

Bernie Sanders brings his political revolution to Worcester

2016-01-02 Bernie Sanders 260Bernie Sanders spoke to an overflow crowd of hundreds in Worcester, Massachusetts Saturday afternoon. The crowd was enthusiastic, and rocked the gymnasium of North High School with thunderous applause. Sanders delivered a populist message, telling the crowd that in his  “political revolution” will not “allow Donald Trump and these other people to” divide working people. There will be no more living in fear and desperation.

Contrary to what people are saying, Sanders says he’s not a “fringe candidate.” The campaign, says Sanders, is “in striking distance of winning Iowa… ahead in New Hampshire” and “we’re going to win in Massachusetts.

The people I traveled with, all Sanders supporters from Rhode Island, were impressed with the speech. There were some small caveats: he doesn’t address foreign policy much and his timeline on a $15 minimum wage seems unnecessarily long. But the dynamism of Sanders’ message and his ability to bring a populist message in support of working families and against the “billionaire class” clearly resonates.

No cuts to Medicaid. Ending “grotesque” levels of income and wealth inequality. Ending corporate welfare and overturning Citizens United. Investing in infrastructure and education. “If a bank is too big to fail, it is too big to exist.” Black Lives Matter. Expand funding for Planned Parenthood. Raise the minimum wage. Climate Change is real. Single payer health care.

As Sanders said, “It’s for us to determine what the issues are, not some billionaire corporation.”

And the man knows how to make an entrance. As the crowd waited in line outside in the cold, Sanders walked up the line, warmly greeting supporters with hugs, handshakes and kind words. His attention was on the people, not the media. You can watch it here:

2015-12-31 White Noise Collective 21A rally was held outside the Federal Court House on Exchange St in Providence New Year’s Eve to demand justice for  Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland and the countless others “who have been killed by state violence and who’s lives have seen no justice in this broken system.” The White Noise Collective [WNC], a “collective of people working at the intersection of whiteness and gender oppression to disrupt racism and white supremacy” organized the rally and march “in response to the non-indictments” of Rice and Bland handed down by grand juries this week.

2015-12-31 White Noise Collective 09Tamir Rice was a 12-year old boy in Ohio gunned down by police within seconds of their arrival on the scene. Tamir was holding a toy gun. Sandra Bland was 28-year old woman found hanging in her cell after being pulled over for a minor traffic violation and arrested in Texas. Her death was ruled a suicide. In both cases no indictments have been brought against the police.

Most of those participating in the rally in Providence were white. “White silence in the face of state violence,” says the WNC, “is a huge part of what allows a white supremacist system to continue taking black lives without repercussion.” The protesters marched through downtown Providence, holding signs, chanting and singing outside the crowded downtown Providence restaurants, and ended up under the Holiday Tree outside the Providence City Hall.

Similar events were held across the country.
