Invenergy fails to gag activists on power plant intervention

During the last two days activists filed rebuttals with the Energy Facility Siting Board as they contest Invenergy’s attempt to suppress public input on its proposal to build a fracked-gas power plant proposal.

The construction of the proposed power plant —part of the energy policy of team Raimondo— would slow down the transition to renewable energy.

As a recent report of the PERI Institute of UMass in Amherst states: “New investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy will generate more jobs for a given amount of spending than maintaining or expanding each country’s existing fossil fuel sectors.”

“Natural” gas has a larger greenhouse gas footprint than coal and oil. Clearly, team Raimondo is wrong on all counts: physics, economics and morality.

In response to Invenergy’s objections to their Motions for Intervention Sister Mary Pendergast, Occupy Providence and Fossil Free Rhode Island argue that the company misconstrues the rules according to which the Board operates.

 

The activists also take Invenergy to task on its claim that they lack sufficient interest to justify intervention.  They remind the company of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Massachusetts v. EPA (2007), which declared that greenhouse gases are pollutants under the Clean Air Act.  They also remind Invenergy of the Endangerment Finding of 2009 of the Environmental Protection Agency that determined that greenhouse gas emissions endanger the public health and welfare of current and future generations.

In a landmark environmental case (Payne & Buttler v. Providence Gas Co., 1910) the Rhode Island Supreme Court ruled that citizens can sue corporations for damages caused by “deleterious and poisonous substances.”

If these facts, rulings and liabilities do not constitute a direct interest, nothing will.

Occupy Providence, in its rebuttal,  said:

Invenergy cannot credibly argue that Occupy Providence lacks sufficient interests to justify intervention in spite of the fact that “the proposed plant will produce greenhouse gases highly injurious to the 99% for the purpose of producing profits which will go almost entirely and certainly disproportionately to the 1%.”

Sister Mary Pendergast echoed the same sentiment and quoted from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’:

26. Many of those who possess more resources and economic or political power seem mostly to be concerned with masking the problems or concealing their symptoms, simply making efforts to reduce some of the negative impacts of climate change. However, many of these symptoms indicate that such effects will continue to worsen if we continue with current models of production and consumption. There is an urgent need to develop policies so that, in the next few years, the emission of carbon dioxide and other highly polluting gases can be drastically reduced, for example, substituting for fossil fuels and developing sources of renewable energy. Worldwide there is minimal access to clean and renewable energy.”

Two members of the Board serve at the pleasure of Governor Raimondo.  That does not bode well for the impartiality of the Board.  This is very troubling when it is clear that the Raimondo administration fails to understand the moral imperative to act on climate change.

Is there any ethical system under the Sun that holds that near-term profit is the ultimate standard?  It is certainly not what is meant by the Affirmation of Humanism that proclaims:

We want to protect and enhance the earth, to preserve it for future generations, and to avoid inflicting needless suffering on other species.

Nor is it consistent with, as the Islamic Declaration on Global Climate Change puts it:

Re-focus their concerns from unethical profit from the environment, to that of preserving it and elevating the condition of the world’s poor.

Citizens of Rhode Island understand that intervention is fully justified and, in spite of Invenergys’ claim to the contrary, that the public interest is not adequately represented by a state government and its corporate allies who willfully act in violation of Article 1, Section 17 of the Rhode Island Constitution, the supreme law of the State which establishes the duty to provide for the conservation of the State’s air, water and land.

Note added after original post: Also the RI Democrats of America (RIPDA) have filed a reply to Invenergy’s objection to their motion for intervention.  In their conclusion they write:

Invenergy’s desire to block RIPDA’s involvement should concern both the Board and the general public, as it suggests that Invenergy wishes to limit the discourse on this topic and stack the deck in its favor.

For the eighth year the Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty held a vigil at the State House near the beginning of the legislative season to, in the words of House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, “remind all of us in the General Assembly of how important it is to keep the issues related to poverty at the forefront of our agenda.”

The vigil was attended by representatives from a multitude of faiths. Governor Gina Raimondo, Speaker Mattiello and Senate President M Teresa Paiva-Weed all spoke briefly to the crowd. The keynote was delivered by Bishop Herson Gonzalez of the Calvary Worship Center in Woonsocket.

Maxine Richman, co-chair of the RI Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty (Coalition) spoke first, outlining the 2016 Advocacy Platform for the group. She began with a sobering statistic. 14.3 percent of Rhode Islanders live in poverty. That rate climbs to 19.8 percent when we talk about children specifically.

2016-01-06 Interfaith Poverty Vigil 05“A 14.3 percent poverty rate is the story for this year,” said Richman, “but it need not be the story for next year.”

The coalition believes that all Rhode Islanders are entitled to affordable housing, nutritious food, accessible healthcare, equitable education and work with decent wages.

Though the General Assembly raised the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) last session, something both Paiva-Weed and Mattiello touted as a great success in their opening remarks Tuesday, RI’s present 12.5 percent rate is a far cry from Connecticut’s EITC of 27.5 percent or Massachusetts’ 23 percent. The Coalition is asking the General Assembly raise the RI EITC to 20 percent.

Channeling yesterday’s loud rally, and on the day that Governor Raimondo has officially broken her campaign promise to issue an executive order allowing undocumented workers to obtain driver’s licenses, the Coalition asked state leaders to take this important step.

Right now low and no income Rhode Island families with children are eligible to receive cash assistance for a maximum of up to 24 months within a five year window. A mother with two children is eligible to receive $554 a month for up to 24 months.  When the 24 months are done, the family is cut off, leaving children to live in crushing poverty. The coalition would like to end the 24 month limit.

2016-01-06 Interfaith Poverty Vigil 27Also, as they have asked nearly every year and to no avail, the Coalition would like the General Assembly to take action to reform PayDay loans. This is unlikely as long as Speaker Mattiello continues to pretend that “arguments against PayDay lending tend to be ideological in nature.”

The coalition would also like to see an expansion of Child Care Assistance and Early Childhood Education. as of Fall, 2014, for instance, only 34 percent of eligible children were enrolled in Head Start, “with many centers maintaining long waiting lists.”

The Coalition further wants to reduce out-of-school detentions which predominantly target students of color and feed the school-to-prison pipeline. They would also like to expand opportunities for workforce foundational skills and occupational training.

The RI Coalition for the Homeless (RICH) needs adequate funding to implement Opening Doors RI, and would like state leaders to seek a $100 million affordable housing bond.

The Coalition also backs efforts to prevent domestic abusers from accessing guns, a bill that died in committee last year to the consternation of supporters and the embarrassment of the General Assembly.

The Coalition would like to see adequate funding for Senior Centers and lastly, the Coalition wants the General Assembly to maintain the current RIPTA Senior/Disbabled Fare Program, recognizing that balancing the budget of public transit of the backs of the most vulnerable is simply cruel. Paiva-Weed was the only state leader to state that she would work to make this happen. Raimondo vowed to make RIPTA “affordable” which is apparently a number other than free.

“These all sound good, but where do we find the money?” asked Raimondo.

“I am very concerned about imposing a fee on elderly and disabled RIPTA passengers,” said Paiva-Weed, “and I am committed to looking at alternative funding.”

Attempting to explain his statement at last years Interfaith Poverty Vigil where he said that he wants to eliminate the social safety net, Speaker Mattiello spun a vision of a Utopian future world. “When we get the economy to a point where everybody’s thriving,” said the Speaker, “every single family has a wage earner that is successfully feeding the family, and everybody is doing well and is well fed… families are happy… that will be the day we don’t need a safety net. And at that time our safety net will justifiably be smaller.”

First Amendment protects freedom of conscience, not just religion

Constitution of the United States“It is beyond reproach that the First Amendment only protects sincerely held beliefs that are ‘rooted in religion,’” said Assistant Attorney General Adam J. Sholes, as quoted in the Providence Journal.

Sholes couldn’t be more wrong and his position is particularly troubling given that he practices law in the State of Rhode Island, the place where the first government guaranteeing freedom of conscience was formed.

The case revolves around Devon Letourneau and Robert Vangel, two men at the ACI who are suing the state, alleging that “they are being blocked from practicing their faith” while in prison. The faith they maintain they are being blocked from practicing is the Five-Percent Nation, which many in law enforcement see as little more than a criminal gang.

According to the ProJo, “The state is asking that the suit be dismissed, saying that prison officials acted reasonably and in good faith in their official capacities and that the First Amendment and the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act do not protect ‘cultural activities and beliefs.’ The state emphasizes that Letourneau and Vangel explicitly reject defining [their beliefs] as a religion and instead consider it a culture or way of life.”

While acknowledging that the state may have compelling interests in preventing these men from engaging in the fullness of their religious practice due to concerns about safety, security and rehabilitation, I have to firmly disagree with Assistant Attorney General Sholes. There is no question that the establishment clause of the Constitution, the part that reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” fully applies.

There are many world views, philosophies, life stances or ways of life that are not religious in nature, yet are considered fully equal to religion in terms of conscience and liberty, under the law. Though I confess to not fully understanding the intricacies of Letourneau and Vangel’s beliefs, from what I’ve read they make no less sense than any number of other religions, faiths and beliefs that are routinely accorded First Amendment protections. Further, non-religious belief systems, such as atheism and Humanism, are protected under the First Amendment as surely as Christianity or Judaism.

Thomas Jefferson wrote “that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions.” He further wrote that officers of civil government should “interfere [only] when [religious] principles break out into overt acts against peace and good order.” In penning these words, Jefferson set a high bar for the United States, a bar we have not always met in times of crisis or fear.

According to the ProJo, five states have classified the Five-Percent Nation as a gang or a security threat. This determination in no way diminishes the Five-Percent Nation’s status as a protected belief, but, per Jefferson, creates an onus on the government to take extra care when restricting an inmate’s ability to practice their beliefs.

The state’s defense then, should not be that the Letourneau and Vangel’s Five-Percent Nation beliefs are not protected by the Constitution as Assistant Attorney General Sholes seems to maintain, but that the state has made every safe and reasonable effort accommodate the beliefs.

In doing so, we will have protected not just the beliefs of two inmates, but the liberty of conscience of all Rhode Islanders.

Poor workers deserve a just wage, a ‘living wage’

The Pope doesn’t care much for greed.

The wages of 30 million U.S. workers cause so much misery they leave within a year. The Economist states this chaos continues because, “The most obvious incentive—more money—is often the last to be considered.”

Often, the issue is greed.

Retail and fast-food businesses also stiff taxpayers. Walmart pays ‘low, low’ wages to impoverished employees: Forbes reports taxpayer assistance totals about $6.2 billion annually.

James Parrott, the Fiscal Policy Institute’s Chief Economist, states, “Wages are so low that 60% of fast-food workers qualify for public assistance.”

What to do? Purdue University’s study concluded that doubling Indiana’s fast-food workers’ wages to $15 an hour would raise prices only 4.3 percent. A $3.99 hamburger would increase 18 cents.

This increase is slight because employee turnover is significantly reduced: Recruiting and training costs decrease; worker morale and productivity improves. With current turnover greater than 100 percent, retail and fast-food industries, on average, lose all employees every year.

This can change. Seattle restaurant owner Jeremy Price says of paying $15 an hour, “It has been a positive change for our staff and our business.”

A living wage is a win/win/win: Employees receive a just wage; employers overcome high turnover and reduced productivity; and taxpayers avoid paying ‘corporate welfare’ for low-wage workers.

The primary problem is greed.

The wealthy counter with the myth: “The rich are makers, the poor are takers.” The reverse is true.

First, lobbyists write laws giving corporate welfare for ‘the takers.’ According to the conservative InvestmentWatch, their loopholes and looting are so brazen that, in 1950, corporations paid $3.00 for every dollar paid by workers; corporations now pay 22 cents.

Second, corporations have stashed $2.1 trillion overseas. This ‘takers’ tax scheme, according to the nonpartisan New America Foundation, eliminated 1.3 million to 2.5 million jobs through 2011.

Third, aristocrats’ paltry effective tax rate on inheritance is 17 percent. The wealthy pay only 20 percent on capital gains.

Fourth, it bears repeating: Taxpayers bankroll corporate profits. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is livid, “It costs this state $700 million a year to subsidize the profits at McDonald’s and Burger King—and that is wrong, and that must stop.” UC-Berkeley estimates public subsidies for corporations’ low wages totals $153 billion.

The greedy rich are takers. Justice requires they pay their fair share—in taxes and wages.

Fifth, this myth states government rewards poor people who avoid work. Actually, nearly 90 percent receiving benefits are working or disabled. The rest have job training or must find work to avoid losing their safety net. All laborers, ‘the makers,’ should be paid wages which escape poverty.

Sixth, poor workers pay significant taxes: Sales taxes; Social Security; other taxes on wages; and property taxes—directly, or indirectly through rent.

Seventh, by spending all their pay, the working poor create demand for more products and services. This demand ‘ripples’ from one business to the next, multiplying business spending. Thus, living wages spur economic growth—and poor workers’ increased spending creates jobs.

Eighth, the system cheats workers. Laborers’ wages kept pace with productivity from 1948 to 1975. Since then, productivity increased 100 percent—but wages for ‘the makers,’ adjusted for inflation, declined seven percent.

The working poor are makers. Justice requires they are paid their fair share.

Wage slavery requires abolition. The ‘Fight for $15’ movement is right: The minimum wage must become a living wage.

Barriers to wage justice include ignorance and fear, but the main obstacle is greed, “The dung of the devil.”

Absent government action, businesses can still win—achieving low turnover and high productivity—by paying substantial annual increases until $15 is achieved. In this season of wonderment and thankfulness, businesses must act with courage and caring to restore dignity and decency.

Of miracles and magic

In the Harry Potter books and movies, wands are built by encasing the hair (or feather) of a magical creature in wood. Though a spell can be cast without a wand, wands make spell casting easier.

Of course, Harry Potter is fantasy and few of us really believe that the magic performed in the books and movies could be real, or that their are creatures possessed of magical powers whose body parts can assist in the casting of spells. Magic in Harry Potter is a fun idea, but it’s not to be taken any more seriously than the Force in Star Wars.

In 2008, Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Providence Diocese showed up at the bedside of a five year old child diagnosed with stage-three kidney cancer to bless her and pray for her recovery. To assist in the child’s cure, Tobin produced his own version of a Harry Potter magic wand: “a relic containing strands of Mother Teresa’s hair.”

“I always tend to be skeptical of these divine interventions, but it is very clear to me that something very special happened that day,” Tobin said, “When she was blessed with the relic, her body reacted and she opened her eyes.”

Mother Teresa is a nun who died in 1997 and is soon to be recognized as a saint. As part of the process of canonization, the church confirmed two posthumous miracles “obtained from God through the intercession of the candidate.” Upon canonization, a Saint’s body parts can be used in reliquaries, and through the intercession of saints, miracles can happen.

In short, the reliquary used to bolster the power of a Bishop’s blessing serves exactly the same function as the wand used to bolster the power of a Wizard’s spell. The only difference is that no one seriously believes in the Magical powers of Wizards and Wands, but there are many who believe in the Miraculous powers of Bishops and Reliquaries.

But they are exactly the same thing.

Thankfully the little girl recovered and is now, at age 13, cancer free. The church is still examining the medical records of the girl’s recovery to determine if this was an actual miracle.

Whether the cure was effected by “an experimental cocktail of chemotherapy along with two weeks of radiation” or through the magical intercession of a reliquary waving bishop is impossible to determine.

But chemotherapy is real, and Harry Potter is fiction, so…

Rhode Island Muslims seek community help in combatting Islamophobia

“I wish to welcome you and also seek your assistance in trying to join together and be able to dispel a lot of these unfortunate characterizations of the Muslim community,” said Imam Farid Ansari, to the crowd gathered inside the Islamic Center of Rhode Island in Providence. Ansair was speaking for the Rhode Island Council for Muslim Advancement, (RICMA).

The rise of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim violence across the country in response to recent terror attacks and political demagoguery has lead Muslim leaders in our state to make strong statements unequivocally condemning the terror attacks in Paris and the recent mass shooting in San Bernardino. Ansari said, “these acts are not representative of the Islamic faith…

“The backlash of these atrocious attacks have been felt deeply in the Muslim community nationwide. Inflammatory rhetoric as demonstrated by some politicians to isolate and marginalize American Muslims is reckless and undermines the safety and security of our great nation,” Ansari continued.

On a positive note, he said, “the American Muslim community in Rhode Island has unprecedented support from public officials, law enforcement, faith community and fellow citizens and we deeply appreciate this support.”

To counter this wave of mistrust, hatred and violence and because “we strongly believe that hate can only be countered by love and peace,” Ansari announced that, “we will be expanding our engagement with the Rhode Island community, to launch several social and educational programs across the state.”

These programs include an open house this Saturday from 1-3 at the Islamic Center, and continuing open houses at mosques throughout the state.

Other speakers took to the podium to denounce Islamophobia and to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community. Lutheran Bishop James Hazelwood lamented the way politicians have used the tragic recent events as an opportunity to divide rather to unite.

Jim Vincent of the NAACP says that his organization is “totally against the xenophobia that is happening in our country today.” Blaming all Muslims for the attacks in Paris or San Bernardino makes as much sense as blaming all Christians for the actions of the KKK, just because they use the cross as their symbol.

Episcopal Bishop Nicholas Knisely, said, “It’s important for us… to reject the voices calling for us to treat the people of one faith differently than all others.”

“Words have power,” said Rabbi Sarah Mack of the Greater Providence Board of Rabbis, “Our language can create good will and harmony in the community, or as we have sadly seen in recent weeks, our words can build mistrust, hatred and xenophobia.”

Dr. Wendy Ibraham of the Sisters Wing of RICMA, said that speaking for women Muslims is difficult, because they are such a diverse group. “Eighteen years ago, I decided to adopt a faith that believed in love and freedom and mercy and justice and kindness for all people, regardless of faith or ethnicity or color or creed… It’s important right now for Muslims to come forward and tell you what our religion is about.”

Toby Ayers, on behalf of the Rhode Island for Community and Justice and runs a youth program called Project Respect. In this program, “Young people become leaders in service to the mission of fighting bias, bigotry, and racism by promoting understanding between all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.

Reverend Thomas Wiles, of the American Baptists channeled Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, who championed religious liberty and freedom of conscience.

“We continue to proclaim,” says Wiles, “that for faith to be true it must be free.”

Evangelical Pastor Andrew Mook advocated for a radical Christianity that embraces love and peace, even at the cost of one’s own life.

The last day of Chanukah was celebrated in Providence last night by Jewish Voice for Peace Rhode Island, a group determined to rekindle their commitment to justice. Nine people held signs, made in the form of a menorah, declaring their opposition to Islamophobia and racism, and in support of refugees and #BlackLivesMatter. As the sun set the menorah was lit and people read their signs out loud.

The nine signs read:

  1. We will not be silent about anti-Muslim and racist hate speech and hate crimes;
  2. We condemn state surveillance of the Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities;
  3. We challenge, through our words and actions, institutionalized racism and state-sanctioned anti-Black violence;
  4. We protest the use of Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism to justify Israel’s repressive policies against Palestinians;
  5. We fight anti-Muslim profiling and racial profiling in all its forms;
  6. We call for an end to racist policing #SayHerName #BlackLivesMatter;
  7. We stand against U.S. policies driven by the “war on terror” that demonize Islam and devalue, target, and kill Muslims; and
  8. We welcome Syrian refugees and stand strong for immigrants’ rights and refugee rights.

Islamophobia and hate crimes against Muslims are on the rise. People perceived to be Muslim have been shot at, assaulted and threatened. Mosques have been the target of hate crimes and arson. One site lists 19 such attacks in the last week. And so hundreds of Rhode Islanders representing many different races and faiths (and no faith) gathered in Kennedy Plaza to reject hate and fear and embrace freedom, peace and human rights.

The rally in Providence was a chance to stand against terror.

Recent events in San Bernardino and Paris have been used by the Republican presidential candidate front runner Donald Trump as a way to foment fear and bigotry. Parallels have been drawn, without irony or exaggeration, to the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s.

At the rally, Imam Farid Ansari quoted German pastor Martin Niemöller, who famously said, “First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist.

“Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.

“Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Here in Rhode Island, a line against the horrors of the past has been drawn. So on the same day that the far right parties in France were routed by voters turning out in force to clearly reject of the politics of fascism and fear, Rhode Islanders came together to support and defend our Muslim neighbors. Hundreds of people crowded Kennedy Plaza to say, unequivocally:

“Not here and never again.”

To be present at this rally, to watch the children play, to see the people smile and laugh together, to hear one speaker after another call for compassion, reason and courage in the face of the murderous ideologies of ISIS and to call for an end to hate speech was to see Rhode Island at its best.

Our state is the cradle of religious liberty and freedom of conscience, and on this day we honored that legacy.

I can’t recall a time that I have felt more proud of my state.

The event was organized by the Rhode Island Council for Muslim Advancement, (RICMA) the Rhode Island State Council of Churches, the Board of Rabbis of Greater RI, MAE organization for the Homeless, the Refugee Dream Center of RI, PAKPAC, and the Association of Pakistani Physicians of RI (APPRI).

th-29As ‘lone wolf’ terrorism will likely rise, how will we relate to Muslims? Should we escalate wars in Muslim countries?

Samaritans, who share religious roots with Muslims, utterly rejected Jesus and his disciples. So the disciples proposed Holy War. Jesus rebuked them.

Samaritans and Jews detested each other: As to religion, Jews cursed Samaritans in their synagogues; as to race, Jews called Samaritans half-breeds; as to foreigners, Jews walked 40 additional miles when traveling north just to avoid Samaria.

Americans mimic this hatred by reviling Muslims: 56 percent recently polled stated Islam is not consistent with American values. This ignores three million Muslim-Americans, most born here, who cherish this nation.

Enter Donald Trump. He hysterically whips up fears of Muslims and Mexicans. He even retweets that whites are killed by blacks 81 percent of the time—with a black man’s image pointing a gun. The truth: Whites killed by blacks total 14 percent.

Though many differ, some prominent Republicans denounce Trump’s exclusion of Muslims as fascism, or declare he violates American values. RI Republican Party Chair Brandon Bell calls Trump’s proposal “un-Republican, un-American and unconstitutional.”

Sadly, I must also conclude Trump is a white supremacist. The evidence: Trump hates and fears people for their religion (Muslims) and their race (blacks) as well as foreigners (Mexicans).

Trump dismisses Jesus’ teaching to love people whose religion, race or nation is different. Jesus’ parable of The Good Samaritan—not The Good Israelite—was scandalous. Today, instead of The Good American, Jesus would scandalize Trump’s followers with the parable of The Good Muslim.

Actually, Christian extremists have killed and maimed far more Americans in recent years than Muslim extremists. Anti-abortion bombers and “Christian” mass shooters are terrorists. Indeed, the Southern Poverty Law Center identifies 142 neo-Nazi and 72 Ku Klux Klan groups. Christian identity and sovereign citizen groups have also increased.

Still, can we imagine discriminating against Christians as Trump discriminates against 1.5 billion Muslims? Imagine a “total and complete shutdown” of Christians entering this country. Imagine registering our nation’s Christians. Imagine surveying and closing churches.

Hatred and fear of all Muslims is no more justified than for Christians.

The U.S. is not a theocracy. We are not a “Christian nation.” We cannot favor one religion, but must affirm America’s religious freedom for all.

Jesus taught we must take the log out of our own eye before removing the speck in our neighbor’s eye. So consider the 3,000 who died on 9/11 as well as the fourteen in San Bernardino. How horrendous these attacks were for our nation! Now consider the half million Iraqis who died. That’s 166 days of 9/11 attacks.

American deaths from 9/11 are one per 100,000; Iraqi deaths are one per 75. Four million Iraqis—one in ten—are refugees. Iraq is decimated.

We rightly condemn jihad, a Holy War. But our politicians’ moral justifications for Iraq’s invasion begat a vastly more destructive Holy War than 9/11.

Jesus rebuked his disciples’ Holy War “solution” for enemies. Do we agree regarding our wars?

It’s not just Iraq. Many want to escalate war in Syria. Have we learned nothing from our failures? How many more years will we kill and be killed in the Middle East? How many more lone wolf attacks must we endure? Does our unceasing warfare risk another massive attack? Are we really surprised that inflicting great suffering brings retaliation?

The military cannot defeat terrorism. Bombs and bombastic rhetoric continually recruit ISIS fighters.

We must overcome our country’s fears and purge our national prejudices. Recall the aspiration of the Star Spangled Banner’s concluding verse. The opposite occurs, our nation becoming ‘the land of the cruel, and the home of the fearful,’ if we adopt Trump’s dogma instead of Jesus’ teachings.

Interfaith vigil against gun violence remains optimistic despite ongoing tragedy

A sense of optimism was expressed by many speakers at last night’s Interfaith Memorial Vigil, held at the Second Free Will Baptist Church in Providence. Despite the steady, deadly drumbeat of mass shootings and the hysteria being generated by the Republican presidential front runner over refugees and Muslims, forces are beginning to coalesce around a series of reforms to our gun laws on both the sate and national level.

The day before Governor Gina Raimondo held “a two-hour discussion… about ways to reduce gun violence” and though the NRA was represented through the Second Amendment Coalition‘s Frank Saccoccio, his views did not dominate the discussion, a far cry from what is usually seen at the State House, where legislators seem to treat his every word and opinion as gospel.

Former State Representative Linda Finn, one of the founders of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence (RICAGV) talked about Saccoccio at the governor’s discussion when she addressed the crowd.

“Yesterday I got to sit in on the governor’s round table discussion,” said Finn, “and it was wonderful because one of the guys who comes to every hearing and just throws out so many lies and misperceptions had three judges sitting there telling him, ‘That’s just not true, what you’re saying, it just doesn’t happen… When a domestic violence charge is issued it’s not two people [who are typically charged] it’s just one person. It’s not two people. [Saccoccio] was saying that most of the time it’s two people that get charged. And if a woman gets charged then she can’t carry a gun to protect herself [from her abuser]. And our politicians and our legislators believe that. And one of the judges who sits on the court she said, ‘I have 800 cases that I’ve been dealing with this year and I only had one situation where two people [were charged with domestic violence.]’”

Last year, said Finn, “was the first time we had more people who were for the gun bills than [the gun proponents] did.”

These facts give Finn hope that this will be the year that real gun reforms bills could pass out of the General Assembly. Specifically a bill to ban domestic abusers from owning or purchasing guns, and a bill to prevent people with conceal/carry permits from bringing those guns into public schools.

Also of particular interest were the words of Imam Farid Ansari. “Obviously the Islamic community has been affected by this scourge of gun violence,” said Ansari, but, “Let me assure you that the images that are being portrayed in regard to Islam is not the true picture of Islam… As an American I myself most certainly condemn these acts of violence that are being perpetrated in the name of Islam.”

Ansari talked about the current climate of Muslim scapegoating and fear mongering. “There is a vocabulary emerging today that is unfortunately being focused on the Islamic community. We hear the words jihadist, terrorist, fundamentalist, all these words are words that are designed to inflame and incite the passions of the people… It’s an evil. It literally is an evil.

“Don’t be persuaded by this vocabulary, of this image being portrayed about Islam. And please do not listen to – I don’t know how to describe him – but you know who I’m talking about.,” said Ansari, getting laughs for his allusion to Donald Trump.

“This portrayal of us as a menace,” said Ansari to a standing ovation, “is absolutely evil.”

First up is The Reverend Jametta Alston of the United Church of Christ giving a rousing sermon against gun with a powerful reference to the Biblical commandment “Thou shall not kill.”

Why I am making a film about ISLAM IN RHODE ISLAND

On almost a daily basis now, our airwaves are absolutely inundated with nonsensical Orientalist prejudice. It is worthwhile note that, while the vitriol is aimed at Muslims and the Islamic faith, we sadly see the prejudice also impact non-Muslims. For example, in September 2001, within mere days of the attacks in New York and Washington, Providence Police arrested a man sitting on a train wearing a turban, failing to recognize that the gentlemen was a Sikh! In this sense, Islamaphobia is an improper term because it fails to account for this type of prejudice. I prefer the term used by the late Dr. Edward Said, Orientalism, because it describes a type of bigotry informed by colonialist misrepresentations of huge sections of Asia and Africa that were once called ‘the Orient’ by so-called specialists whose pedigree included service to the European colonial mission.

In this sense, I have chosen as the topic of my next film a study of the Islamic faith in the Ocean State titled ISLAM IN RHODE ISLAND. Featuring local figures such as Imam Farid Ansari and his wife Na’ima, Drs. Richard and Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban, and RIFuture’s own Steve Ahlquist, my goal is to discuss and heighten awareness of a rich and varied history that dates back to the colonial era.

Some of these points will include:

  • The role of slavery in bringing Islam to America
  • Newport’s role in the so-called Barbary Wars, the first time the United States dealt with Islam as a political and military force
  • How the Nation of Islam and the teachings of Malcolm X impacted the civil rights struggle of the 1950’s and 1960’s in Rhode Island, with a particular discussion of the problematic media narrative regarding the later years of the group’s founder, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad
  • A dissection of the socio-economic demographics of the community and how migration from Africa and Asia since the 1960’s has impacted it
  • Where the community is going in the light of 9/11, the War on Terror, and our continued foreign policies in Muslim-majority states

Providence observes Transgender Day of Remembrance, Resilience

2015-11-19 Trans March 002“The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual day of observance to honor those who have lost their lives to anti-trans violence, bigotry and suicide,” said Monay McNeil, reading the words of August Guang, who helped organize a march down Elmwood Ave in Providence Friday night.  “Lead by people of color, the First National Trans March of Resilience… in numerous cities across the nation… [is] a way to honor the strength and resilience of trans lives, specifically the lives of trans people of color…”

Trans people and allies met at Knight Memorial Library in Providence and marched for nearly twenty minutes to PrYSM (Providence Youth Student Movement). Marchers chanted, “Black Lives Matter! Trans Lives Matter!” Traffic on Elmwood Ave was slowed and police stayed at a respectful distance.

At the end of the march participants crammed into PrYSM’s meeting space for a vigil, poetry and art.

McNeil noted the importance of this march, saying “As of 2015 there have been at least 700 [Black Lives Matter] protests across the country. Many trans people of color witness these protests in confusion and/or frustration, wondering why such national outrage is not also seen when trans women of color are brutally murdered and assaulted daily by both police and civilians.”

The night before the march, at the Beneficent Church downtown, the Transgender Day of Remembrance was celebrated with a service for trans persons who lost their lives in 2015. Candles were lit for each person who lost their lives this year, and as each name was read aloud, a candle was silently extinguished, slowly darkening the room.

This is the 16th year for the TDOR, started in 1999 in San Francisco by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in response to the 1998 murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts, a case that remains unsolved. The full list of those who lost there lives this year can be seen here.

Mayor Jorge Elorza and Representative David Cicilline both spoke at that event, but it was the moving stories of Julián Cancino and Dominique Pistone that focused the service on what’s important: trans lives. Cancino spoke of being a Mexican immigrant to this country, having escaped persecution in his native country. America, to its shame, was not a welcoming place. Pistone spoke about a lifelong process of coming out and finding her true, authentic self. (I unfortunately don’t have Pistone’s talk on video, but I do have the short video of Alejandra Blaze, Ms. Trans Rhode Island, who spoke about trans empowerment and liberation.)

Catherine Cool Rumsey, a former District 34 state senator who was defeated by embattled Sen Elaine Morgan in 2014, was “horrified” by Morgan’s infamous email besmirching Islam was “horrified” and said it solidified her intention to run against Morgan in 2016.

“It does not represent the district,” she told me. “We need to represent our state and country in a better light.”

Cool Rumsey lost to Morgan 52 to 47 percent in 2014. A one-term progressive Democrat, Cool Rumsey defeated conservative Republican Frank Maher 55 to 44 percent in 2012.  District 34 is made up of portions of Exeter, Hopkinton, Richmond and West Greenwich.

cool rumseyIn the 2014 cycle, Cool Rumsey was endorsed by Clean Water Action, Planned Parenthood of Southern New England, RI Young Democrats, RI Progressive Democrats and the RI Sierra Club, among others.

Morgan made national headlines with an email she sent that said, among other offensive passages, “The Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape, and decapitate anyone who is a non Muslim.” She was writing because she doesn’t think America should accept refugees fleeing war-torn areas of the Middle East.

Fellow Republican rep. Bobby Nardolillo, who held a State House event today on the same issue today, said Morgan should consider apologizing to Muslims.

nardolilloRepresentative Bobby Nardolillo said fellow Republican Senator Elaine Morgan should consider apologizing to the Muslim community for her now-famous offensive email that besmirched Islam and said Muslim refugees should be relegated to camps if allowed into the United States.

“I would definitely say it was offensive and she should consider apologizing,” Nardolillo told me after addressing a small crowd at the State House on why America should reject refugees. “I completely disagree with her comments. She insulted a whole Muslim culture and I think that was totally inappropriate.”

Morgan, a freshman senator from South County, sent an email obtained by WPRI, that said, among other offensive passages, “The Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape, and decapitate anyone who is a non Muslim.”

To my knowledge, Morgan has yet to publicly apologize for the politically incorrect email. A Senate spokesman for the Democratic caucus had not seen one, and asked his GOP counterpart to apprise him if one was issued. RIPR political reporter Ian Donnis said in a tweet he reached out to Morgan for further comment multiple times and has not heard back from her. According to the WPRI story, Morgan said the email should have read “the fanatical Muslim religion and philosophy.”

Morgan’s email was publicized nationally today, the same day Nardolillo led a scheduled event at the State House on why the United States should reject refugees from war-torn parts of the Middle East because of national security concerns. He said he didn’t think Morgan’s insensitive comments discouraged people from attending his event, which he said was more of a press conference than a rally.

The Rhode Island State Council of Churches, the RI Council for Muslim Advancement, the Board of Rabbis of Greater Rhode Island and the American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island today issued this open letter to Governor Gina Raimondo, following her comments yesterday that the controversy surrounding the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Rhode Island was “much ado about nothing”:

Dear Governor Raimondo:

As the rhetoric and vitriol surrounding the issue of resettling Syrian refugees in Rhode Island increase, we urge you to demonstrate leadership on this critical humanitarian issue by firmly and publicly denouncing the rising xenophobia we are witnessing.

Yesterday you were quoted as calling it “much ado about nothing,” and saying that you would “take a look at it” if asked by the federal government to help with resettlement. Respectfully, when other public officials in the state are protesting efforts to welcome any Syrian refugees in Rhode Island by holding public rallies and calling for the internment of any refugees that do arrive here, this is anything but a non-issue. Nor is it something to be blithely ignored for now, and only looked at sometime in the indefinite future.

We believe that it is time for you, as Governor of a state that has welcomed immigrants and refugees from its founding, to forcefully affirm the view – in the same manner as some of your Gubernatorial colleagues elsewhere around the country have done – that Rhode Island is prepared to welcome immigrants and refugees fleeing violence from Syria, and that you reject fear-mongering that undermines our state’s strong commitment to non-discrimination against people because of their ethnicity or religious beliefs. To ignore these troubling strains of prejudice is to only give them force.

2015-10-15 East Side Racist Lit 002Fifteen plastic sandwich bags containing racist and anti-semitic literature and weighed down with white rice were left on the doorsteps and sidewalks of East Side homes in Providence over night and discovered early Thursday morning by residents. Fire and police responded by cutting off access to Methyl St and part of Lorimer Ave. They were treating the material as a Level 1 hazard pending test results.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Stephen Paré, in a brief statement, said that the police were investigating the event as a hate crime and asked that East Siders report any further baggies that the police may have missed as they swept nearby streets. They are also looking for any information about a person or car traveling through the area last night when the incident occurred.

Mayor Jorge Elorza said that the incident was devisive and not to be tolerated in Providence.

The East Side is home to many Jewish families and families of color, though it is too early to know if specific homes were targeted.

A similar incident occurred in East Greenwich recently last Winter. A #BlackLivesMatter march was held last month, partially in reaction.

2015-10-07 World Ends 002During the recent visit of Pope Francis to the United States, in every city he visited, (Washington DC, New York City and Philadelphia,) there were people at the fringes of the largest crowds wearing bright yellow shirts, often carrying large yellow signs, handing out literature proclaiming the end of the world for today, October 7, 2015.

The eBible Fellowship had previously predicted the world would end in May, but this time, Chris McCann, the founder of the fellowship, assures us all that the world will be “Annihilated” and that today is the day.

I spoke to a woman distributing these eschatological flyers outside the Philadelphia train station. I asked her if she truly believed the world would end on October 7 or if this was a paid temp position. Sheepishly, she admitted she was getting paid, and doesn’t think the world is really going to end.

Maybe this will be something you can tell your grandchildren about, I said.

She smiled at that.

Most religious claims are unverifiable. We can’t measure souls or disprove life after death. These claims persist because no definitive proof of their falsehood will ever be presented. The best a nonbeliever can do is say, “I see no evidence to believe in Gods or souls or miracles.”

But those predicting the End of the World, a one time event with no historical precedent, are easily disproved time and time again. All you have to do is wake up the day after.

2015-10-02 Circumcision 004The Bloodstained Men & Their Friends, a traveling anti-circumcision protest group, set up outside Providence Place Mall yesterday in concert with Intact Rhode Island. Both groups have held protests in the past, but this year report that their message was greeted with more thoughtful consideration and less incoherent invective than in the past.

Circumcision is an issue that confronts Americans mores on sex, childcare, health and religion. It’s a hot button issue. The Bloodstained Men, wearing coveralls with a large red stain on their crotches, confront these issues in not so subtle ways. Their signs, such as, “STOP CUTTING BABY PENIS” and “STOP TORTURING BOYS” are jarring and unexpected sights. I’ve covered the arguments both groups make against circumcision here. Mike Ferrara, a Rhode Island native and contractor working at Gtech came out to briefly join the protest, saying that he was uncircumcised and proud. He offered to “whip it out” and show me, but I declined the offer. “If you’re circumcised you’ve lost a half inch,” said Ferrara.

Pope’s meeting with Kim Davis ‘deeply disappointing’ to LGBTQ Catholics

DignityUSA, based out of Boston and “the leading organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Catholics,” is disappointed by the Vatican’s confirmation that Pope Francis had met with Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis while visiting Washington DC last week.

“The news that Pope Francis met with Kim Davis while failing to respond to repeated requests for dialogue with LGBT Catholics and their families will be deeply disappointing to many Catholics, gay, trans, and straight alike,” said DignityUSA Executive Director Marianne Duddy-Burke in a statement. “It may be seen as putting the weight of the Vatican behind the US Catholic bishops’ claims of victimization, and to support those who want to make it more difficult for same-sex couples to exercise their civil right to marriage. This encounter could, in many people’s minds, transform the pope’s US trip from a largely successful pastoral visit to the endorsement of an exclusionary political agenda.

“I fear that this meeting and claims that the Pope told Ms. Davis to ‘stand strong’ will embolden the many US bishops and others who continue to try to turn back support for LGBT people. It will make even more of us feel like the Pope’s message of mercy and love was not meant for LGBT people and families. It points again to the deep divide between Catholics who affirm and support their LGBT family members and friends, and the hierarchy, which is tragically out of touch.”

I was in Philadelphia during the Pope’s visit, and I can confirm the profound sense of disappointment LGBTQ Catholics and their families were feeling at being so cavalierly ignored by Pope Francis. The Pope was in town for the “World Conference of Families” but the term “family” was narrowly defined in a conservative Catholic, anti-LGBTQ fashion. Only one gay man was officially allowed to speak at the conference, and he is celibate.

Because of the Catholic church’s exclusion, a series of LGBTQ events was held in Philadelphia but outside the conference. I reported on the Transforming Love forum that featured transgendered and intersex persons describing their lives and their deep desire to be included in the Catholic church. But the issue goes deeper than how some LGBTQ people define themselves religiously. For many people, the official stance of the Catholic Church is a matter of life and death.

Whenever a religious leader spoke out against sexual diversity, or even against abortion, a transgendered woman is killed.

At the Transforming Love forum Nicole Santamaria, an intersex woman from El Salvador said, “I came here to the World Meeting of Families with Pope Francis, to speak for the voices that were silenced by those who will torture them, by those who will kill them. And the voices that were silenced already by people who feel they have permission and they have the obligation to murder us, to exterminate us, to persecute us, because their religion told them that it is okay to kill a person that is different.

“Whenever a religious leader spoke out against sexual diversity, or even against abortion, a transgendered woman is killed. Every time those kind of things are heard, that means death. Whenever this is reported in the media, you can read the comments from the people, and the comments are, They deserve it, they are abominations, God doesn’t love them, it is okay.”

At another event in Philadelphia that same day, that I was blocked from getting to because of the excessive security brought to bear upon the pope’s arrival, a picnic was held for 14 Catholic LGBT families. These families were not granted official status by the World Meeting of Families conference. Instead, they secured a location off site. Equally Blessed, a coalition of four Catholic LGBT groups (of which DignityUSA is a part) sent a letter to Pope Francis inviting him to their picnic.

The letter went unanswered, and of course Pope Francis declined to visit with these families.

But he did make time to visit with Kim Davis in Washington.

“We still believe that for the Pope to hear the stories of LGBT Catholics and our families would be a key step in reversing the official Church teachings that damage so many people,” said Duddy-Burke in her statement, “In fact, his meeting with Ms. Davis makes this even more urgent. We have people in Rome right now, on the eve of the Synod of the Family reconvening, who would be happy to talk with the Pope if he’s willing to take a small step towards righting this injustice.”

It is telling that Pope Francis is more interested in secret meetings with people like Kim Davis, who would subvert the very meaning of freedom of conscience, than he is in openly meeting with LGBTQ Catholics and their families who have decided to follow theirs.

Pope Francis wants to be the new face of a better brighter Catholicism, but underneath his benign mask is the leader of a bigoted, morally bankrupt institution responsible for far more harm than good in this world.

Thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington DC to hear Pope Francis speak to Congress on Thursday. Just outside the security perimeter there was a complementary event held, a Rally for Moral Action on Climate Change, headlined by dozens of environmental activists, interfaith religious leaders and musical guests such as Moby. The rally was structured so that a break could take place between speakers and guests to livecast the Pope’s remarks.

As much as the Pope’s comments resonated with the crowd, the highlight of the rally were comments by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, one of the architects of the Moral Mondays protests in North Carolina. Barber delivered a demand for radical, systemic change on a host of related issues, making connections between economic inequality, structural racism and the environment, saying, “Destroying the Earth is just wrong. Hurting the poor is wrong. Treating corporations like people and people like things is just wrong.”

We have never overcome any of these evils without a moral critique that challenged their grip on the heart and imagination of our society.

A moral critique is still needed today.

“We hear Pope Francis’s cry that we cannot love our earthly neighbors and yet sit quietly while the Earth herself is made unfit for human habitation. We cannot love humanity and yet give way to forces that derail the very climate that gives us life. As His Holiness has said, we must acknowledge the ‘very consistent scientific consensus that we are in the presence of an alarming warming of the climactic system.’ We cannot be silent a world ‘devastated by man’s predatory relation with nature.’ The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein.

We must provide educational and job training programs, transitional financial assistance and job opportunities for the industry workers displaced due to the transition to a renewable energy-based economy.

In a world where there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many hungry children, that there are so many children without an education, so many poor persons. Poverty today is a cry.’

2015-09-24 Pope DC 071“Four to five percent of U.S. deaths have been found to be attributable to poverty. That is nearly 120,000 people, each of them created in the image of God. Each of their precious lives matters. Their death is the scandal the Pope is exposing.

“It is a moral disgrace that there are 14.7 million poor children and 6.5 million extremely poor children in the United States of America – the world’s largest economy.

“We know that nearly half of the world’s population — more than three billion people — live in poverty on less than $2.50 a day. One billion children worldwide are living in poverty. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. 805 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat.

“We can and we must do better.

“If we focus more on ending poverty than cutting the social safety nets that help the poor, we can do better. If we move beyond the politics of lust for power to the politics of love for people, we can unify around a moral agenda. And we can do better. If we secure pro-labor, anti-poverty policies that insure economic sustainability by fighting for living wages, strong safety nets for the poor, fair policies for immigrants, infrastructure development, and an end to extreme militarism that puts more resources in bombs, missiles and weaponry than food jobs and shelter, we can do better.

“God is using Pope Francis to prod or consciousness and push us toward action. By daring to preach the gospel of truth and justice, challenging the sins of economic exploitation, poverty, and climate destruction, he is showing the way to revival, repentance and redemption.

2015-09-24 Pope DC 047“To our ears, the Pope’s message resonates with the ancient Jewish text that says, ‘Woe to those who legislate evil and rob the poor of their rights.’ This Pope sounds a lot like Jesus, who said in the Gospel of Matthew that love, mercy, and justice ate the weightier matters of the law.

“There are some Americans who applaud the Pope for his theological orthodoxy when he calls on us to love one another but decry his message as “political” when he points toward inequality and injustice. These are the same voices that grow hoarse touting “morality” with respect to abortion and homosexuality but cannot hear any suggestion that poverty is a moral issue.

2015-09-24 Pope DC 042“This deafness to the Pontiff’s purpose suggests that Jesus himself would not be welcomed by them in America. Their complaints reveal the serious moral crisis we find ourselves in.

“Somebody must stand and say, “It doesn’t matter what party is in power or who has a political super-majority. There are some things that transcend political majorities, partisan politics, and the narrow categories of liberal versus conservative. There are some things that must be challenged because they are wrong, extreme, and immoral.

Destroying the Earth is just wrong. Hurting the poor is wrong. Treating corporations like people and people like things is just wrong.

So let us join the Holy Father not in the politics of Democrat and Republican but in God’s politics of love and justice.

“‘May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that we may live from deep within our hearts. May God bless us with righteous moral anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of God’s creation, so that we may work for justice, freedom, and peace.’

“Let us fill the whole earth with the song of hope and redemption in this hour and sign with our lives that old hymn which says, ‘Revive us again / fill each heart with thy love / let each soul be rekindled / with a fire from above.’

“‘Lord, rekindle in us a fire for justice, a fire for truth, a fire for hope.
